July 2007 Releases - Part 2
Posted by Lyndon Brown on July 17th, 2007 |
The rest of the July 2007 releases are now complete. You can get them via the links in the download page
Looking at the release time, we seem to be getting back on track now after all the major changes the project has been going through since March :)

Thank you fot this one. I’m very happy that you didn’t respect the tradition anymore and that all the July releases came out before July was over.
Good job.

Well, thank you very much for all your effort, skill and hard work!

@plue
If what you meant was why does it link to the forum thread, then try reading the fine prints at the Download page.
To ease you up, here’s the “fine prints” :
> Notice: This page has been put under construction!
> The old download page just wasn’t cutting it anymore.
> We’ll be working on a new one soon!
> So, until it has been re-designed, here are some
> temporary links to forum topics where you can find
> download links…
There you go.
@AP Team
Thanks again for this release, especially to Lyndon for putting the pieces together for this version. ;)

This is the single most useful utility I have ever used. Being the only IT guy at a non-profit, and having to build images for all the various models of PC I get coming in, this tool and all the updates has literally saved me hundreds of hours. My donation is but a nano-token of my appreciation for the efforts of this team that help me crank out these boxes.
Thank you SO MUCH! -Jack Riggen

Welp just to report.. i got the dreaded Yikes divide by zero error mentioned in the forum after i updated: What AutoPatcher was trying to do
It appears that the error occured while AutoPatcher was trying to initialize the form’s screens.
Where: frmMain.Form_Load()
Error Code: 0xB: Division by zero
Tried to uninstall and reinstall no effect. Tried the following 3 suggestions with no efect
Install both the setup files in AutoPatchers \win9xnt folder [not exactly sure what this means, I copied the original downloaded files here]
If that doesn’t work, go to start > run, type REGSVR32 SCRRUN.DLL and press enter [done successfully but no effect]
If that doesn’t work, copy files from C:\Program Files\AutoPatcher\bin to C:\Windows\System32 [copied successfully but no effect]
Tried rebooting of course. Now just get the error message when i try to run the program..

Great stable application. Huge thanks to the AP team.
One question: for the extras addon releases, do I install the July release over the top of the May release (like an update) or do I uninstall the May release first? Thanks.

A bit of a “bug” in this July release.
In KB928366 (a critical update for .NET Framework 1.1 SP1; may not apply to everyone), the options are set to “/quiet /norestart” where it should’ve been just “/Q”.
If anyone’s having trouble with this critical update, just edit its .apm file or run the update manually.
July 20th, 2007 at 6:19 am
I confirmed the bug with KB928366… Going to learn how to edit the .apm file…
July 20th, 2007 at 6:47 am
For manually editing the .apm file, look under this (default) directory :
C:\Program Files\AutoPatcher\modules\Critical\
…and then look for this file :
KB928366_DN11SP1_x86_enu.apm
Editing it is easy; just use Notepad or any text editor.
The line that you’ll want to edit is line 60.
Change this :
“Module:\NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe” /quiet /norestart
…into this :
“Module:\NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe” /Q
Just note that editing the .apm file manually will make your AP as an “unofficial release”. =)
It’s probably more “cleaner” to just run the .exe file manually.
The update file is located (by default) at :
C:\Program Files\AutoPatcher\modules\Critical\KB928366_files\
Just run the only .exe file there.

Where are the translations packs?
July 26th, 2007 at 8:22 pm
I just have to say WHAT AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL APPLICATION!!! My brother’s hard drive took a dive, and I helped him do a scratch install of WinXP on a new hard drive. Unfortunately, the XP install CD had only SP1 on it. My brother has only a dial-up connection. I dreaded the prospect of getting up to SP2, and then all of the updates that have come out since then.
What a slick interface! I loved that I could download the core, and update that with the update, DirectX, and Extras packs. (The website/documentation needs to explain that a little better. I really didn’t know what I was doing, but followed what I thought I was picking up in the forums. I had nothing to lose; if things went FUBAR, I could just do another scratch install of XP.) The descriptions of each item were a really nice touch. It was great to be able to download IE7, since if you do it from Microsoft’s site, you have to screw yourself with WGA spyware. (That made me wonder how Microsoft’s legal eagles like that.) After I selected all of the updates I wanted installed, I clicked “Next” and then sat down to eat dinner . 75 minutes later it was done!
I was surprised that a non-Microsoft entity could develop an application that applied all security updates, and in the correct sequence, and know which patches to replace in the update packs. That’s a LOT of knowledge and homework that I’m glad I didn’t have to sacrifice for.
And, why didn’t M$ develop this kind of app in the first place? Do they believe that everyone that has WinXP has broadband? On second thought, maybe it’s better that they didn’t — who knows how badly they would have FUBAR’d it?
I forgot how I found AP, something I googled after several tries. Unfortunately, AP is a well-kept secret. I will do my best to counter that aspect. And I promise a donation as soon as I’m able.

thanks and keep up the good work :-)

So how’s the Office addon packs coming along? I hope they will be ready in August. I am really tired of M$ slapping their WGA on everything. While I can understand their motives it really hinders mass updates on large networks and makes all our lives that much more tedious.

The Office packs are coming along nicely. No promises but so far we are looking pretty good for next months release

August 16th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
hey guy nice work !
but i expect something more
guys plz make autopatcher open source!!!!
1. take help and involve thousands of other developers.
2.better code and faster deployment.
3.code develops in direction the developer/user community wants.
4.u get a better autopatcher at the same time giving less inputs to it(i read u are really busy).
5.not just updating windows , it can become a tool for updating all other heavy projects. so now users now don’t need the full new version but can take advantage of autopatcher making updates smaller
6 i belive soon i will become the de-facto updating tool for os/apps (like firefox became de-facto web browser of world)
hurray!!!!!
August 16th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
Given the fact that Autopatcher deals with security updates, I would prefer to NOT make AutoPatcher open source. I use AP specifically because I can trust the AP team to release legitimate MS source files. I would never trust an open source community for security fixes on someone else’s product.
I also do not believe for a minute that things would be “faster” for AP. Besides, nothing stops you currently from downloading the updates on your own and using the Module Editor to create your own module plugins for AP.

Hi Guys,
Will we see the August release soon?
Cheers,
August 17th, 2007 at 5:11 am
I think I’d take a while to explain why AutoPatcher is not open source (although the idea has crossed our minds on more than one occasion):
Opening the source could allow people to create their own releases as official. Since AutoPatcher deals with patches, we do everything in our power for users to have confidence that the patches they receive are the ones that Microsoft offers. Right now anyone can create a custom release, but doing so will not go unnoticed. AutoPatcher will flag it as unofficial and alert the user about the situation. Several other less important reasons do exist (the windows platform software development model, not enough interest from a developer side), but ultimately, the big problem is that we’re dealing with Microsoft patches and we must make sure we keep offering top-notch services. The current team has done a great job so far (even spotting problems in Microsoft’s own patches) and I’m quite happy with how things are. Rest assured, if I ever decide to stop working on AutoPatcher, I will release the source code (either to those interested or publicly).
Other quick answers:
soorena: Yes, AutoPatcher 5.6 allows you to slipstream to a share, but that depends on those who create modules to take advantage of this feature. Stay tuned!

Thanks again Autopatcher team for your hard work. I’m new to Autopatcher, but have been definately impressed - so impressed that I’ve donated some bandwidth to a mirror site of the project (ap.500words.ca). It has saved me lot’s of time!
Thanks!
