Updates Replaced by XP SP3 Removed
Posted by Erik Ramey on May 8th, 2008 |
As of today when you update your Windows XP release via APUP, all updates replaced by SP3 will be removed. Additionally the Windows 2000 and 2003 (x86) releases have been updated in order to support the SP3 transition and will need to be updated if used in conjunction wiith the XP release.
Math 101: Before SP3 - AP XP total download size = 302MiB After SP3 - AP XP total download size = 145MiB Ain't math grand?

As I know SP3 is not final yet, is it a good idea to remove all updates until SP3 is not officially became final and available on microsoft.com ?

Actually XP SP3 has been offically released to Windows Update as of May 7th.

Due to many people having problems with XP SP3 is there a way to get the last fixes before SP3?
I don’t know if you’ve seen this:

or this:

Thanks.

Yeah, no offense, but I’m sure a lot of people would have liked this process to be optional, as not everyone is going to install SP3 immediately, for whatever reason. Don’t get me wrong, AP is great and I’ve used it for ages, just… seems like we either have to accept the change, or not update AP for a while…

dose apup find/see xp sp3 installed then delete the hotfixes not needed anymore to get that smaller folder size?
May 10th, 2008 at 7:43 am
let me say: people reading news by half complaining about sp3? let me say something to yours: thanks HP and some other by that. the issue regarding HP machines is already detected: this happend on AMD machines. why? easy. HP and many others did his own version of xp. in HP case, by eg, they have choosed the intel power driver intelppm.sys to run in all machines that they sell, including INTEL or AMD. by only one issue: INTEL drivers us not to work in AMD processors. and yes, it will crash or something
there’s an workarround to that:
http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/archive/2008/05/08/does-your-amd-based-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx
another fix: cut off your reseller recovery cd badly done, find an untouched source for installation and install all over again. or you can blame MS by an mess that your own reseller did

Hi, can you change this to make it optional please? SP3 will not install on my PC and I know a lot of people are having crashes under SP3.

I too am having problems with SP3 and lost the chance to get the previous updates. Why must the entire community be forced to move onto SP3, which if you havn’t seen, has many issues.
May 12th, 2008 at 8:14 am
The problem above may stem from a conflict with the system files HP installs to id their systems. It is not specific to all AMD Processors.
I am running a XP-Pro Machine with an AMD Processor and have installed all the updates AutoPatcher has offered for my XP-Pro System. I have not had any rebooting problems.

Can You pls republish the pre-sp3 list (the list was stable, wasn’t it?)…. At least, who missed it, and who doesn’t want to install sp3 can still update its system up to April2008.
Thank You

all updates after SP3 will most likely require SP3 installed, if you are not updating to SP3 for whatever reason, then don’t update auto patcher. Making SP3 optional is not really an option if autopatcher is doing what it was designed to do, and that is making sure you have a fully portable update client that will allow you to distribute all windows updates on multiple pcs without having to download the updates on every single client pc.

I love Autopatcher & what you guys have done with it, it has been a great help over the years in my IT support job & at home - BIG thanks!
However, I work in the health service where there are a lot of bespoke applications, which will take a while to test properly with SP3 & get approved (if ever!). While I know it would be “cleaner” to run with a SP3 setup, this is not an immediate option for us. Surely an optional SP2 and/or SP3 release is possible as for the Portuguese versions?
Cheers

Just got a few new computers at work and wanted to get XP SP2 installed and updated, so I came to the AP website to hopefully grab the latest AP release with the current SP2 update list…but I guess I missed out on the SP2 list. I can’t install SP3 at work yet because our corporate head office hasn’t fully tested and approved it. Oh well…I guess I will have to install the updates through the Windows Update site.
One thing that I wonder about, however, is how much storage and/or bandwidth is used up by hosting the SP2 list? All 300+ MB of updates for XP SP2 come from sources other than the AP website, don’t they? It would sure be nice to have the option of choosing SP2 or SP3 for a while until more people are able to properly test and adopt SP3.

Thank you very much for the late and very smart release of AP and for previous ones as well :)
As for XPSP3 I am using its RC-s since November 2007 and now use RTM 5512. Therefore did not have any problem yet! EVEN MORE after SP3 the Windows XP became something like stable OS:)
The smart change of AP is just great and if someone wanted AP for SP2 the latest was avialable in August of 2007 so you could have downloaded it by that time.
As for Office 2003 updates… today I noticed that there are around 11 updates after Office2003 SP3 but somehow APUP does not download them into autopatcher. I am donwloading them now from microsoft via updates but would be great if I had them in our smart AUTOPATCHER as well :)
Cheers guys and keep the great work!

Ok Seems I missed something. Nothing is missing in AP for Office2003. I just needed to re-run AP again ;)

In my opinion you should announce the end of support for SP2.
Plaese, can you at least enable SP2 patches for at least 2 weeks - so that we all can test SP3.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Just weighing in on this topic also. I too thank all the work done on the APUP project but do think the SP2 patches through April should remain available. I have a network of stable SP2 boxes and really have no interest in SP3 until all the online chatter about issues dies down. Shame on me for missing the window to get the last updates.

I wanted to post what I posted in the forums here:
Hey guys. This is what I’m going to do and why I’m going to do this.
I do agree that there should have been some prior warning about AP deleting SP2 superseded updates. For this reason, I’ll go ahead and work on and bring back the SP2 for XP pack for AutoPatcher temporarily. On June 1st though, I’m going to remove it.
Please understand everybody, I have job just like you do. (hopefully ) I already am managing thirteen AP lists which I’ll probably be splitting up the Vista pack later for future server 2008 support. Maintaining two lists for the same updates is going to make troubleshooting and updating that much more difficult. If you disagree, then I’m sorry. I already put my time and a good portion of my personal life aside in order to constantly update and release these updates for AutoPatcher each month.
