I am a newbie when it comes to using AutoPatcher!

I have WinXP x64 Pro. I downloaded and installed apup.zip. I opened apup and clicked the top 2 autopatcher updates, and the WinXP 64 Pro.

After downloading the 400 mbs I clicked and installed all updates, then rebooted, then installed remaining updates in list that hadn't turned 'blue', and rebooted again. And then I rebooted again, just for the hell of it! :) And all remaining updates before prevous reboot turned blue, I think that is what I wanted.

1st Problem.

Upon opening Windows Update/ Microsoft Update site, there are several updates reported to be still needing to be downloaded ie 100 mb still.

2nd Problem.

When opening apup.exe now, making sure that it still has my OS selected and clicking Next, it shows "fetching apup.script from autopatcher.com" and underneath, "checking with autopatcher.com". The top progress bar is full and the bottom progress bar is empty. Below this is the speed 4kb, but with a negative number - time left ie "-19".

Please tell me if I am doing something wrong, and/or how to fix the above

1st problem: not all critical updates listed at wu are in critical modules and not all recommended updates are at recommended modules. some of them are at components, msxml, .net and even the recommended ones. by going to WU and taking notes about the kbs needed, you shall be able to find them at autopatcher. if not, please report

2nd Problem: sometimes, our server goes offline. it us to be just for a couple of minutes, but sometimes, it may take longer. when that happends, the progress bar becomes empty, because apup is unable to reach our server to download the script. the only one workaround for this is wait a couple of minutes and try again or try reach our server with any browser, to be sure that it's running. if is running, apup should be able to reach us

Hi ausi and welcome...

NOTE: As I was writting this, because I'm as slow as molasses I can see
christiano posted first. I'll post this anyway!

A few things. By default, (unless there has been a change) 3 boxes (selections)
will be checked automatically based on the system APUP is run from:
...AutoPatcher Updater
...AutoPatcher Engine
...Native Operating System -> In your case XP x64

You wouldn't need to select anything. If you might want to create an AutoPatcher
package for another OS, say 2000 SP4, just be mindful that if you run APUP from
your XP x64 computer, you will need to uncheck XP x64 and check 2K - just FYI.

About the 2nd problem. I ran APUP, selecting only the "updater" and "engine"
and got similiar results as you - empty lower progress bar, and -5 time remaining.
The important thing is I got a "Finish" tab to close APUP, did you? If so, your fine,
just a by-product of a fast download that couldn't sort the time element.

You infact did what I always do to "confirm" my download. I re run APUP making the
same selections, and I want to see the empty lower progress bar and a "Finish" tab,
this tells me everything is done, nothing else to download, and would I like to close
APUP. I might worry if there was something downloading and the lower progress bar
froze while downloading.

About the 1st problem. What are the missing updates? Were they updates AutoPatcher
tried to install (you selected) but couldn't? Like christiano mentioned, they may be
updates in another location (folder) in AutoPatcher. They may be Addons that you
didn't select when you created your AutoPatcher package.

yes and no. if you matches autopatcher with WU, then you will realize that WU say that some of the .nets are critical or at least recommended updates. but despide of this fact, apup doesn't auto-select the .net package and, in order to have those, you need check the .net package and manually select those to install, or, in a simple check with wu, some updates will be missing

also, some things that are critical for WU (like IE7) aren't critical for autopatcher. because of that, any user that doesn't select a few dozen things into autopatcher goes to WU and find that may there a couple of critical updates and even some recommended in there that aren't in the recommended modules for autopatcher. in this category, you may found wmp11, that for wu is an recommended update

yes and no

Just to clarify. I was referring to how APUP functions. The "Updater"
"Engine" and the installed OS should be checked automatically.

I was responding to this statement from ausi:

Quote:
I opened apup and clicked the top 2 autopatcher updates, and the WinXP 64 Pro.

I figured they would be checked allready - no big deal.

yes, but this also was part of his question:

there are several updates reported to be still needing to be downloaded ie 100 mb still
and part of this issue is related to apup functions, that doesn't select by default some updates that WU say that are critical or recommended, like the .nets (that are in his own package). also, autopatcher.exe doesn't select by default several updates that WU say that are critical, even if those updates are already downloaded, like IE7 ;)

(_Security_Updates_)
Any updates you feel should be added (if missing), the place to mention it is in the XP x64
hotfix depot. There are a few patch areas that they don't address, it is mentioned at the
top of the thread.
http://www.autopatch...p?showtopic=321

I'm not sure but it looks like XP x64 may be suffering from neglect if the hotfix depot dates
are correct, with the latest changes being 09-28-08, don't quote me on this. You can
always install the missing updates using WU/MU until they are added.

(_Office_2007_)
If what you need is SP1 for Office 2007 it may be in the APUP release list. Generally any
service packs would be downloaded directly from Microsoft and installed separately, not
using AutoPatcher. I do see a SP1 Addon Pack for Office 2007.

A nice addition to your XP x64 release might be the addition of AutoPatcher for Office
2007, the Office Addon Pack, and the SP1 update. They will all fit nicely in the same
AutoPatcher folder.

I'm not sure of the UAA Bus Driver HD Audio issue but it may be in the Extras Addon Pack.

To quote the saviour himself, Barack Obama -> "this is above my pay grade"

Hopefully these concepts, the interaction of APUP, AutoPatcher, and WU/MU, and also, "how
you can know you are fully updated using AutoPatcher" can be spelled out in a few short
statements and can be a part of a new "getting started" guide. Put your thinking cap on, you
will be consulted for advice. :P

no problem. i already have the full list of selections that are needed to fully match WU. since i us apply autopatcher at least 5 times a week, i did my personal version with those selections already made (for windows xp, of course) ;)

When you see this, nothing is wrong at all. This is a bug in Apup itself. Apup downloads this file, but it does not properly clear the screen before it finishes. The strange time is also a bug in Apup itself, because it does nor properly catch rounding errors or numbers very close to zero.

Also, a gentle reminder to everyone in this topic that the AutoPatcher for Windows XP 64-bit release is not fully up to date, so WU will definitely show updates still to be installed, after Apup and AutoPatcher have been run.
