The answer to your question about getting the needed files is right in front of you - you can
get them on your own - look closely...!

This is a screenshot of a barebones AutoPatcher folder--No Modules have been downloaded yet!

I renamed the apup folder to AutoPatcher. Now "apup.exe" and "hit_this...cmd" are in the
AutoPatcher folder. There is an "apup_bin" sub folder - look at the screenshot for the contents.
Lastly, I direct downloaded everything else and put the files in their respective folders - this took
11 minutes total to create a functional AutoPatcher directory - and I'm on dialup.

Until the development team can figure out why your machine isn't allowing apup to work, you can
build a barebones working directory by downloading the files directly and placing the files manually
into their respective folders as in the case of -> "apengine.rti"

as well, extracting the contents of the remaining .7z zip files and putting them into their folders.

If you should try this, when you are done run apup again with only the first 2 selections checked,
AutoPatcher Updater and AutoPatcher Engine, and if you get no errors and a "Finish" tab to press
- you are good to go.

NOTE! You may still have issues down the road when you update your AutoPatcher release, apup
may not want to do a cleanup routine or something - you wont know until you try.

Excellent! Nikolinho, glad it is working for you.

A few things - this is my opinion...

A good habit to get into is to verify the download by rechecking the same boxes
that just finished downloading, in this case it looks like you checked:

...AutoPatcher Updater
...AutoPatcher Engine
...Windows XP SP3 English

APUP will scan the folders and verify the files (takes a few seconds), when it is finished
you should see the "Finish" tab appear - if so your good to go - you can burn an up-to-date
release.

If you plan on updating the folder you just assembled, DON'T remove any files from the folders
just "Copy" in your case, the "apup" folder on your desktop to disk, otherwise you will be in the
mess you were earlier - assembling another AutoPatcher folder from scratch.

Yes, Mike, I think I got it already. Sure, it's checked by default those 3 fields (AutoPatcher Updater, AutoPatcher Engine & Windows XP SP3 English) and I update it. It said "fetching".
And of course, I will not remove those files from desktop, I will leave them to update it further ocasionally.

Nope, mister, the problem didn't vanish just like that by itself. If I didn't download those 7zip files that YOU gave me in that upper post, my problem will still exist!
I downloaded each of them, unzip them in propef folders (many of those folders weren't in "apup" folder so I created them like in that picture that you put on "imageshack".
When I finished to unzip all the necessary files that my "apup.exe" didn't create, I just double click on "autopatcher.exe" and it worked!

If I didn't explain exactly what you wanted, please let me know. And sorry for my english, I am trying.

Yeah, it would be great if the problem would be solved so Larry, me and maybe others may not have problems in future - I mean for those who download "apup" for the first time, now I don't need to worrry... of course. also i said, the answer was in your log. apup doesn't handle well some kind of characters in his path, like çãõá, and most of english users think that this sort of issue doesn't affect english users. well, your log proves that this bug affect at least the english users that chooses an non-standard character in apup full patch. in your case, you are downloading apup into your desktop and you are running an user account "Niki&Kiki". what looks wrong into this? nothing, right? but like our "joão" (john) user, you also have an non-standard character in apup full path. in your case, you are running apup with this full patch C:\Documents and Settings\Niki&Kiki\Desktop\apup\ and the issue is related with the & character. it's pretty easy to workaround the issue: just move the entire apup folder to another location, without any ãéç!@#$%¨&*()_+ in his full patch. i'm not sure about all those characters, but there's an high probability that the same issue will happen if you choose any of those in apup full patch

I hope you come back to read this Nikolinho, some sage advice from cristiano,
a simple fix - just "move" your APUP folder and avoid the weird characters, this
can confuse APUP, and maybe AutoPatcher - not sure myself.

My feelings are keep it simple C:\AutoPatcher or ?\AutoPatcher.

The only thing not right about this fix is that Larry had the same problem and a farely
reasonable directory structure. From Larry's log file.
-> Starting APUP From: C:\Temp\apup\apup

The only strange name in this structure is "temp" - could this throw off APUP?

Yet, APUP wasn't moving any files from temp_bin and would re download the same files
over and over. From Larry's log file.
-> Extracting C:\Temp\apup\apup\temp_bin\apengine_exe.7z into C:\Temp\apup\apup\

This is what I would do...

..Move your folder and then run "apup.exe /log" checking the same 3 boxes as
mentioned before - and look carefully...

..Watch APUP as it is downloading, it should be real quick since you already have the XP
SP3 release completed - it should need the 3 scripts and then promptly delete them.

..Look for the "Finish" tab.

Check your log file at the end...This is what you want for an up-to-date release that
has all the files:

***Starting Detection Routine Phase***
***Downloading Releases***
Files to be Downloaded: 0
***Processing Cleanup Routines***

If there are Files to downloaded, your problem still exists.

If you see "Files to be Downloaded: 0" - your golden!

well, we are looking into an issue regarding apup temp folder, that may lead to a lot of missing files. james noticed when this issue first started an i've expended most of free time of today to try catch the issue and i've realized that the issue regarding apup temp folder could happen even with my own script, so, i did an bypass to that issue into my script. i'm sure that my approach to fix this issue isn't the best one, but it shall works. basically, most of the scrips are downloading the temp files (mostly the .7z files, but also some .exe) into temp_bin (you may notice that this folder is created when apup started and removed when apup finish his job). but seems that sometimes the folder can be removed before the files be fully extracted, leaving the user with a lot of missing files. currently, we are working to fix this issue, that may happen mostly in fresh downloads.

sometimes, luck helps that. at the updates for this month, one update replaced an problematic file (kb946665), so, this one has gone for good. looks impressive, but ms did nothing to fix an issue in his own servers that was preventing an golden download for this one since several months ago.

Just wondering cristiano, can you get the "Files to be Downloaded: 0" and still be
missing something. This is how I have determined my release was up-to-date?

BTW, I'm just a humble appreciative AutoPatcher user that "Don't Know Squat".

I should learn to keep my mouth shut and leave the troubleshooting to the pros,
as you can see my posts get long - I've tried to keep them short I just don't know
how. I guess one way is to just keep quiet huh - lol!

Maybe I'll start taking my own advice...

HATE to bother you, guys.... But just as I thought "everything's fine now", I started autopatcher.exe, did everything properly and in the menu where you choose do you want to install critical, non-critical updates, add-ons etc, when I click on those fields my "Next" button stays grey - I just can not press it!!!
It really pisses me off cause I don't know how to fix it. I LISTENED to your advice, I put Autopatcher on D:\Autopatcher, unzipped apup file and folder, move previously downloaded modules and necessary files, then I choose to update it and it was clicked first 2 options (Updater, Engine) and SP3 on English, and it updated little bit and AGAIN - nothing! My "next" button won't work so I cannot update my Windows!

I think I will manualy install EVERY patch that I believe i need, or I will leave like that Autopatcher for some time... Just to say I have NEVER EVER had similiar problem with former, old one Autopatcher. I used 2007 summer edition and everything was perfect.

SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, I just want this to be fixed, not to annoy you.

See? No weird characters like "&". And by my amateur view it looks like I have the exe module files, but I need some kind of "apm" and "apf" files, probably made by AutoPatcher.

not made, downloaded by. in your case, the last part of your log says that apup is trying to extract files from the temp_bin folder, but we figured that sometimes, this folder is removed before the files be extracted, leaving you without the .apm files and all the other files. if apup is unable to solve this issue in a next run, the only one workaround for this issue is manually download and extract the files into the places that apup is trying to (the url for the download is in your log and also the target for each file to be extracted). that was the test that i did a few hours ago. i believe that james is working in a workaround for this issue right now

edit: i've just figure an possible workaround. when apup is running, stay in apup folder. when you see that the temp_bin folder is in there, jump into that folder and stay in there. this will prevent the folder to be removed and maybe (just maybe) let the files be extracted fine. apup may end with an error because of that (apup will be unable to remove the folder), but except for that, everything shall be ok

I would absolutely try to rebuild AutoPatcher on your own, I know you can do it
and you will become a pro when your done. Just pay close attention to the files
and their locations: You can have AutoPatcher working by following a few simple
steps - if your up it.

Break the log file into small similiar pieces and it will become real clear where all the
files go.

Look for those random "single" files, you'll see em.

Take a section at a time, download the apm files for that group and rerun APUP, the
number of files needed wil get smaller.

Get the "Critical", then "Tweaks", then "Components" - see what I mean.

Use the Log file and the XP SP3 script as your guide - look for it in the temp_bin
folder when you are downloading and "copy" it - use notepad to view the log and
script - here I go again...

I know it is a pain but you can do it but I don't blame you if you don't want to.

Ah, never mind. No big deal - I've just wanted to say that I do not understand EVERY english word which is written here, I mean those words which are not using very often, and when you ask, I would prefer Serbian but I know that's impossible. :-) But I think I understood you and Guitar Mike pretty much after 2nd reading and SOMEHOW, after deeper thinking and downloading those "apm" and other missing files, SOMEHOW I DID IT! I am not saying that I've done everything 100% correct, but I did my best (luckily I am not a pc begginer).

"Next" button is black, hallelujah! It works. But WHEN I update my XP with all the critical files I will let you know the details.

You know, it would be TERRIFIC if this problems will not occur on my pc in future versions. I can't imagine to lose my whole day again in downloading missing files and putting in right place. I KNOW this staff is amazing and doing the best job you can, but I'm just saying that my wish is just to download next version, to choose what updates I want, after downloading those files to run autopatcher, to install all the patches, and to enjoy while I'm sitting or doing something else. You know, it would be great if everything would work smooth like with 99% of AP users.

Keep doing this great job. I hope I wasn't too "painfull" for all of you and hope this can help all of us to improve. After all, maybe I improved after these manuel fixing things.

years ago, i had to think before translate something to english or from english to my own language. then, i've realize that i don't need translate every single word in a sentence, but the main ones. you will be able to understand what is written anyway. later, when you are more familiarized with the language, you start to translate more words. but in order to do that, you need exercise. in my case, i us to remove captions from the movies and turn the sound a little bit laugher. this may teach you how to translate faster and better before you think about it

I never did get apup to properly extract autopatcher.exe. I copied the entire apup folder from another computer and transferred it over and all seems fine.
So it is up and running, but the problem has not been resolved.

yes, those files can be important to you and for apup, but that part of the log doesn't allow us find the issue that prevents those files from beeing downloaded. can you please post the entire log, without any edit?
