APUP has the ability to make a log-file. The log-file contains a record of all detection errors and all download errors. If you see the on-screen error message "One or more files failed verification..." the log-file will have all the details of all the errors.
If you see the on-screen error message "One or more files failed verification...", please do not post that error message on the forums without any further details. Instead, you must run APUP again and make a log-file. See the next two sections: How to make a log-file and How to post a log-file.
How to make a log-file
APUP makes a log-file if it is run with the option (switch, a.k.a command-line argument) " /log". There are three methods you can use to do this:
(1) Use the Command Prompt
If you know how to use the Command Prompt, add the /log option, as shown in the following example:
C:\my_apup_folder>apup /log
(2) Create a custom shortcut
Perform the following step-by-step instructions to create a custom shortcut:
- In Windows Explorer (the proper name for My Computer) locate "apup.exe" in the apup folder.
- Right-Click on apup.exe and on the menu that appears, click on "Create Shortcut". A new file called "Shortcut to apup.exe" will appear in the apup folder.
- In the apup folder Right-Click on "Shortcut to apup.exe" and on the menu that appears, click on "Properties". A "Shortcut to apup.exe Properties" window will appear and "Target" will be selected (highlighted).
- Press the right cursor key to go to the end of the Target box. Add " /log" at the end (including the space, but not including the " " characters). The "Target" box will now show -> C:\...\apup\apup.exe /log or "C:\...\apup\apup.exe" /log
- Click OK. The modified "Shortcut to apup.exe" will be saved in your apup folder.
(3) Use the .cmd file provided
Re-download APUP and a file called "hit_this_to_generate_a_log_file_for_apup" will appear in the same folder as APUP. Double-click this to run APUP and make a log-file.
How to post a log-file
APUP creates the file apup.log in the same folder as APUP. This is a text file which can be opened in Notepad or any other program, such as a Programmer's Editor, that reads text files.
Please never post a log-file if this is the first time you have run APUP in a folder, or you have deleted anything and are starting again. The log-file will be very long and tell us nothing useful. All we will know from this log-file is that you ran APUP for the first time.
If you receive the error message "One or more files failed verification" or you have been asked by a Developer or forum Staff member to post a log-file, please always run APUP twice.
Do not add or delete any files.
Make sure that APUP is run:
- with the same releases selected as before,
- in the same folder as before, and
- with no other changes.
Post the log-file from the second run only. Please read the Log File Reference for more information.
