My general steps were as follows:

1) Install clean OS - WinXP with SP3
2) Update drivers
3) Run autopatcher and updated WinXP
4) Install Office 2007
5) Run autopatched and updated Office 2007

Control panel shows that Office 2007 SP1 has been installed. The About menus show that I've installed SP1... e.g. Word says "...2007 (12.0.6311.5000) SP1 MSO (12.0.6320.5000)"

Yet Automatic Update/Microsoft Update detects SP1 as something I have not installed... any ideas?

some time ago, Automatic Update/Microsoft Update was saying that i was needing office 2007 sp1 too. the issue: i run BROffice (aka OpenOffice) since long ago and i did't have installed any office at my machine at that time. but when office 2k7 was beta, i've tried it, i didn't like and i've removed it) . sometimes, they just have broken detections. but in your case, another issue can be present: the office updates doesn't leave clues saying that they are already installed to WU. so, wu doesn't know that they are already installed, unless that some reg info is added too and currently, autopatcher may be lacking those infos. if i'm not mistaken, someone reported the detections that another software chooses to math the detections that WU requires. probably, after proper testing, those detections will be added too
