Question: Once I have downloaded and installed the updates via Microsoft Update site, is there somehow I can put them in a backup file/folder?

Am I able to backup the updates before I click the 'restart' button, that I assume I will get when they finish downloading and installing?

Hi ausi.

Did you just download the Server 2003 release or did you also update your system?
The Server 2003 x86 release is about 152 megs - using APUP. To determine if you downloaded
all of the Server release (via APUP) re-run "apup.exe /log" and check only Windows 2003 x86
and look at how many files are left to download - at the end of the log file.

If you need to update your system to .Net 3.5, I believe that is about 242 megs - from scratch.
Also, the Office 2007 SP1 is about 200+ megs.

.Net Framework and Service Pack 1 for Office 2007 are separate downloads using APUP (785 megs total).

The point of using AutoPatcher/APUP is the ability to have for re-use the updates etc and not have to download
all over again. I'm not sure about MU. I'm not sure what approach you are using to update your system...

So... if your system isn't already up-to-date with the items you mentioned,
re-run apup.exe /log and make sure you got all of the Server 2003 release, if you also need .Net 3.5 and Office 2007
SP1, get them as well (BIG Download).

Update your system. I would not do everything at once -> (update Server only - reboot) -> (update .Net only - reboot),
-> (update Office 2007 to SP1 only - reboot). This is my suggestion.

If you should need to update Internet Explorer, I would do this "FIRST", before "Server" ".Net" and "SP1 for Office"

After you have updated your system, see what may be left by using MU. There may be a few updates missing but
not 300 megs worth.

I just did a fresh format/install of Server 2003, installed SP2, and ran a new copy of apup. The total downl0ad with the apup-autoselection of Server 2003 sp2 and 2000 sp4 is 381 mb !!! :0 I think that is where I went wrong above lol I needed to de-select 2000 sp4, and total download for 2003 drops to 130mb :)

Am yet to try your suggestions above, but I think i found what I was doing wrong :) apup auto-selected 2000 sp4 as well as 2003 sp2, I needed to de-select 2000 sp4.

Will keep you posted. Thanks for the prompt support!

Hi ausi...

I am not exactly sure but I think the auto-selection of both Server 2003 x86 / 2000 SP4 is a bug that
appears on some Windows Server 2003 machines. I don't think you need to have 2000 SP4 selected
in APUP to create a Server 2003 x86 release - so yes de-select it.

Are you getting any of the errors mentioned in this post:

The reason I'm not sure about the dual selections is from Erik Ramey's comment from post 10.

APUP shouldn't mark 2000 initially when you run APUP. This was an unrelated tweak to the release.list file.
Hmm, bug or tweak?

Anyway, if you have no errors don't sweat it. I sounds as if everything went well.

Also, my suggestion about IE is regarding updating to the next stable version - from 6 to 7 etc. I
do this first before anything else - reboot - then update other critical components and so on.

as suggested, I updated my system via apup, by a 3 step process, after successfully downloading all Windows Server 2003 and DotNet Frameswork updates, with no errors in created log file after clicking FINISH with no error dialogue box(es).

First, as suggested, I ran autopatcher and updated only IE, and did a restart, next, again as suggested, upon successful restart, I then only updated the DotNet Framework (Net 3.5), and then did 2nd restart. After successful restart again, I then again as suggested, then installed all remaining updates, and again did a successful restart. No errors upon update, or upon system restart, and no errors in apup log still.

======================================

I just went into MU (Microsoft Update) and there is another 52mb in updates I need to download, but that is a BIG difference from the 280+ that MU told me to download in previous install !!! :)

Problem I now need to fix is why MU is not recognising that my sound driver needs updating! Looks like i'm up for some research time to get my sound to work in 2003 :(
