As Cristiano says, the job is not that simple. In addition, consider:

- There are incompatibilities with various versions of:
- Cooliris;
- Google Toolbar;
- Java JRE;
- RealPlayer;
- Skype;
- Windows Live Messenger & Mail;
- Cooliris;
- Vista may need an update first;
- Windows Search may need updating;
- The first security vulnerability has just been announced;

I installed Google Toolbar Version: 5.0.2124.6042 and it works fine with IE8 on WinXP. Latest Skype didn't work with our office page.

not all people require CoolIris or even google toolbar. windows messenger is at v14.0.8064.0206 now and that version works with ie8 (at least, i didn't found anything that isn't working yet). skype is at v4. soon or later they will update his software. in a test, that is working too, but i didn't tested spype browser plugin (and i'm betting that the issue is related to this one).
so far, the worst concerns that i saw about ie8 was related to home banking. some of them doesn't work very well and some virtual keyboards may not work, but in the tests that i did with 3 know banks, they was working. i didn't tested the advanced home banking features, but the complains was about the virtual keyboard and it is in there. still, i'm betting that the reported issues was regarding old versions of java. wow, that just reminds me: Caixa Econômica Federal (one of our biggest banks) still runs some parts of his site with ms java (like "Conectividade Social", that hold the tasks related to the ones that lost their jobs, are getting new ones, etc). worst: they say that it works with sun java and it's a lie. at least for the "Conectividade Social" part, this one may not work, unless they finally do the job that they should have done about 10 years ago and finally let ms java rest in peace

Updates are available for some of the software that I mentioned -- full details are in the IE8 releases notes.
Much more important, I have received a reliable report that installing Adobe Reader 9.1 causes the IE8 install to fail, because Adobe Reader locks a Registry key that the IE8 installer needs to write to.

Well that's one way to keep IE8 off your machine!
Of course there's always this:

interesting. in my version for this module, adobe reader always is the last thing to be installed. but i can test that, since i have an virtual machine that doesn't have ie8 or adobe reader 9.1.
i will test it at night, just to be sure

@James:
to your "reliable source":

http://img257.images...iablesource.gif
tell him, that according to his report, i've installed adobe reader 9.1, then, ie8. also anyone can see, booth ie 8 and adobe reader 9.1 are opened, showing the exact version for each one. i can sent the install logs, if required to, but, from my findings, he blamed ie 8 for an issue that happened due another thing
edit: by the way: booth was installed by hand, to be sure that adobe reader 9.1 was installed first. and yes, adobe reader 9.1 is 1046 and ie8 and the whole system is in 2070

test 2 done. the first one was in a windows xp pro sp3 fully updated, adobe reader 9.1 installed before ie8. ie 8 was installed without any worries. at this second test, the subject was an windows vista ultimate x32 sp1 (integrated by vlite), working in a toshiba notebook. nothing was updated at that system and i'm pretty sure of that, because that machine didn't touched my network even by a second (and yes, that windows was running in grace time due that). still, the same method was taken: first adobe reader 9.1, then ie8 vista. no worries at all, that yours can see by this image:

http://img9.imagesha...staultimate.jpg
that machine just joined my network right now, to activate and add search mechanisms. right now, it is downloading the updates for windows vista
in deed, no issues at all regarding ie 8 install and it didn't ask to update first. i can show the logs, if required, because i don't need return that machine tomorrow.
by me, seems that the issue related to adobe reader 9.1 and ie8 was caused by something else and someone is really overreacting about that. of course, a lot of issues may happen if you are talking about an "fully tested ms product", but at least this time, i was unable to replicate the issue and the very first rule about an bug that i know is: it needs to be replicated. and, at least for this one...

"fully tested ms product"
to contend with - of course, if it is a mandatory upgrade then add it to AutoPatcher, but I say let someone else be the test
bed and not the AutoPatcher community.

> if there are going to be real issues
there are, in fact. i forgot to report, yesterday (it's after midnight in here, should i said 2 days ago?), i had to update an machine that was still with sp2. that machine had windows live toolbar, from msn 2008. just after update to ie8, at restart, one folder was opening with choice guard inside. i've just fixed that by removing choice guard and windows live toolbar. of course, it could be related to anything else, but it was fixed in that way
> if it is a mandatory upgrade then add it to AutoPatcher
it is. in a very short time, it will be even at automatic updates. imho, run ie8 or not is an user choice, not mine. we can provide the tool to deploy their choices, but that doesn't means that it should be an mandatory update for all for some time. with sp2, sp3, etc we always did one thing: for some time, until the update becomes stable, we offer the new one, but also the old one. please, remember that we just removed the updates replaced by sp2 some time after it and the same thing with sp3. i really don't believe that with ie8 could not be the same thing. for some time, until this one becomes more stable, we could offer booth, i can't see why not. it could be even also an addon, but it should be in there for those that wish it. of course, this update will not be mandatory until deployed by automatic updates, so autopatcher can live without it until that (or, of course, offer it also an addon or a plus in the script)

@Cristiano,
Thanks for running the tests.
Absolutely. I agree.
This guy usually gives accurate and precise reports. I'll have to see what went wrong this time. Did you allow browser integration of Adobe Reader, or not?
BTW if anyone is wondering, 1046 = Portuguese(Brazil) and 2070 = Portuguese(Portugal).

just next next next enter, like any normal user do. the version chosen to the tests is the one with 23,7 MB (AdbeRdr910_pt_BR.exe), that can be found at adobe ftp. the md5 for that file is 341E27F684F6C56246932015718BA386
just also an joke: WU for vista still downloads at least one update to ie7 (kb947864) after the install of ie8. worst: it says that it was installed ok (an update for ie7 after ie8?
the funny part is that vista is still downloading updates. i'm running the 3rd round and is already has downloaded about 700mb and it is still downloading... ok, ok, just the updates for vista ultimate have about 250MB...

Oh please don't remove the IE7 installer when you decide to add IE8.
At least give it a grace period to live until users & developers have a chance to work things out with the new software.
I've personally blocked the deployment of IE8 on my machine using the blocker tool I suggested earlier.
Let's say we wait about 6 months, before removing IE7 + updates from the scripts...

We will certainly allow a grace period, but it may be less than 6 months.

Works fine ... I Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) and several other non-priority updates showing up. Windows update (WU) from the tools menu redirected me to Microsoft Update (MU) so I'm not sure if they have gotten rid of WU in favour of MU or whether this is as a result of me having used MU in the past.
