with this restriction, you will be unable even to see this module for any vista. for the module WindowsUpdate_x64.apm is another history. this one works for all. this issue will be investigated. if confirmed, this module will be removed from vista scripts, but, so far i know, this is an update for vista too. please, see for yourself:

restore point, perhaps?
are you pretty sure that you have selected this one to install and was this one that did the issue that you are describing? can you please give us more details about your install selections to allow us better point the issue?

Well, it did it again on the next clean install. I don't recall the exact settings that were used, but I don't select that particular module during ANY Autopatcher run, as I prefer to install that one via Windows (since it causes so many problems). Also, Microsoft Updates slows down most PCs and their update scanning, so I exclusively use a mixture of Windows Updates and Office Updates (a bit clumsy perhaps, but much faster for XP - not applicable for Vista of course).
In the end, I'm not sure what caused the problem: it seemed to be related to IE 8. On the 2nd install, I left IE 8 out of the installs until AFTER I had clicked on the yellow "get more updates". After IE 8 installed, the update thing crapped itself again (when going directly to the page in IE 8), but worked fine through the Windows Update control panel. I couldn't use restore, as I do clean installs with that bloat-er turned off.
Anyway, all very strange and unpleasant.
