Apup startingup problem

Hi, I am new to this forum.
I have just downloaded the apup zipfile. Extracted it in the same folder. After hitting the apup.exe file I get the following error log file:
APUP Has Started
Operating System: English (1033) Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
Current Locale: English - United States / Non-Unicode Default: English - United States
Starting APUP From: D:\Unzipped nieuw\AutoPatcher
Date & Time: 18-May-2009 10:15 UTC Offset: 1
***Downloading/Processing Releases.list***
List file HTTP location: http://www.autopatch...m/releases.list
releases.list:
releases.list: ctlwinsckdownloader component failure
Exit button has been pressed!!!
Before registering to this forum I have read somewhere about the same problem, but can not find it anymore. Anyhow the solutions there offered did not help me.
I am using windows XP pro SP3. I use GData ineternet security. In the firewall rules I made a rule allowing apup.exe to connect to the net and vice versa.
I do not have a content filter in the firewall.
Please help me.

so we don't have to repeat ourselves.
Something at your end is stopping apup.exe (from connecting to the internet) dead in it's tracks!

Thx Mike,
The recommendations I did where:
Making a rule in my firewall allowing apup.exe to connect to the internet.
Checking out if I have a content filter in the firewall for apup.exe. (As far as I can tell I don't have such a thing)
Checking the RICHTX32.ocx version in windows\system32, I have the latest version.
I also switched off the firewall for 5 minutes, but that did not help either.
that is about all I did try.

sometimes, that isn't the only one change that must to be made. according to the firewall (comodo and also some others), you must do a few changes too
> I also switched off the firewall for 5 minutes, but that did not help either.
some firewalls stay active even after that, at least, for some components. again, the comodo issue
by the way: the RICHTX32.ocx solution is for another issue

we need to know about your firewall. basic things, like the name and version. but if you are talking about the comodo issue, it is related to Defense+ module. that shall be disabled to apup or at least when apup is running. that is done by Right-click on the icon in the system tray (a shield with a checkmark on it) go to "Defense+ Security level" and click on "disabled".

Ok thank you,
I have GDATA internet security suite. version 2009 in which G Data firewall 2009 (2.0).
I don't know anything about the comodo issue.
I just did a new apup.exe and checked my firewall protocols. I find that the rule about apup.exe was authenticated. So it looks like the firewall is not blocking it.
And the error remained the same
What to do next?

it may not be true. comodo locks apup even with an allow rule, due some of their modules. it may be the exact same issue, because i just was able to find more people having issues with this firewall and other softwares that require internet access. the sad part about your firewall is that their company doesn't seems to have an forum or even some faqs about it. so, i only can guide you with an guide done by someone else, pointing that to allow an software on gdata firewall, you must open it, choose firewall, double click direct connection, allow or deny...; set in/outbound connection, browse the executable file (in this case, apup.exe, at apup folder) and, in the last step, choose Allow and press finish. then, apup shall be on gdata allow list.
i've write this entire guide, because seems that this software do rules and set proxy for their auto-rules. apup doesn't work with proxyes and, due that, an direct connection shall be in place, like the rule described

I did it again, so now there are 2 of the same set of rules in the allow list of GData.
But the error remains.

are you under any kind of proxy? windows firewall is enabled? this issue that you have is always related to firewalls. it can be even your ISP, that may be running an firewall and you may not know about it.

negative on all counts, no proxy,no windows firewall and no ISP firewall or I would have noticed it long ago.
If this is not going to work out, is there a way to download windows updates without using the apup.exe?

manual download on proper folders, perhaps. but that will be an pain. also, once someone did an "mod" for apup. it was hosted in here, but i can't check if the link is still alive because i'm behind an corporate firewall that locks that url. i have that file at home, if really required, but i didn't tried it, because i know that this tool will miss some required actions
but still, the only one thing that us to give that issue that you have is some kind of firewall locking apup. we also know that Spyware Doctor locks MSWINSCK.OCX and that creates that issue. if you have Spyware Doctor or any other software like it, please report. if you have spyware doctor, the solution for that is is disable Intelliguard
also, we can help you more with an detailed log of your running processes. if you can, please try do this:
1. Open this link: Process Explorer in a new browser window.
2. Scroll to the bottom of the window and click "Download Process Explorer (1.6 MB)". Save it to the Desktop.
3. Right click and extract “ProcessExplorer.zip” to the Desktop.
4. Open the extracted folder of “ProcessExplorer”, double click “procexp.exe”.
5. Click Agree to run it.
6. Click View on the Tools menu, and select “Show Lower Pane”.
7. Click View on the Tools menu, click “Lower Pane View”, and select “DLLs” on the sub-menu that pops up.
8. Run apup.exe again.
9. Then highlight "apup.exe" in the Process Explorer main (Upper) pane.
10. Click File in the Tools menu, and then select “Save As…”.
11. Save "apup.exe.txt” to the Desktop.
12. Post the log in "apup.exe.txt” to this forum thread.

> First I have AD-Aware 2007. But I am not running it and I disabled it from the startup menu via msconfig.
never do that. msconfig doesn't work for that, because some softwares run services and even if you disable part of it through msconfig, you still will have the service running
interesting. seems that you are running apup in compatibility mode (that is not required and nor recommended) and also you seems to be running Home Networking Configuration Manager, that is related to Windows firewall. i can be wrong, but seems that you have 2 firewalls running in your machine: gdata and windows firewall. when you have an third-party firewall, windows firewall shall be disabled, to avoid issues like this one. please, try to fix that

Ok thanks Cristiano,
Windows firewall was and is switched off, according to the Security center. Security center does not detect my Gdata firewall either. It does not detect any firewall.
Than I killed the ad aware proces via Proces explorer. But apup.exe gives the same error.
I don't know/understand the thing about the Home Network config manager. I do have a small home network. And apup running in a compatibility mode does not mean anything to me. Please explain, and advise how to cope with that.

> I do have a small home network
that can explain a few things, including Home Network config manager. this tool is also used to create small networks, like you described. in some cases, one machine has an direct connection an the other ones, don't. those machines may require reach that machine that has an direct connection (and acts like an internet proxy). that works fine, in deed, to a lot of apps, but apup doesn't handle proxies. to apup, an proxy is the same thing than an firewall, because apup will be unable to have an direct connection. sometimes, at the main machine (the one that has an direct IC), you may be able to have an direct IC, but sometimes, don't. in all those cases, the app will think that is running through an firewall. usually, the ones that play online games or run some kind of p2p software are aware of that, but the other ones don't.
see, at home, i have an small network too. and apup works. what i do? simple. i have an router, that has the direct connection. then, all the other machines are connected to that router through an hub/swith, that allow those extra machines have an direct IC as well. see, same kind of home network, jut another approach. the main difference: port 80 us to be opened for all machines in this case. but for machines that have connections with another machine acting like an proxy/internet server, the port needed to reach internet can be any other one. at my job, i have to reach port 3128 to that. also i can't tell this to apup, i never will be able to run apup from here, unless i try to bypass that limitation with an tool like the one described in here. i'm not suggesting to you run that tool at all, because you still will be required to know a few things about your network, like your proxy adress (it's the ip of the machine that has the direct connection) and your proxy port (and that can be an problem, since it can be anything. sometimes, you can find that info at internet options, connections, lan configs)
compatibility mode: details about it can be found in here

I do have a small home network.
is interfering with apup.exe and everything about your system is important, anything apup.exe might have to pass
through - and it is no fun dragging this information out - please let us know of your system setup!

Something at your end is stopping apup.exe (from connecting to the internet) dead in it's tracks!
network at post 16.
Note: I can see now I only repeated what Cristiano has already asked!

> So as far as I can tell I have a dirct connection to internet
no. every single router can act also an firewall. i don't have the model of your wireless, but assuming that it has an built-in dsl modem, it still is an firewall and yet, you may have an direct connection to internet. also, the service that controls windows home networking sharing is active in your machine. this also may act also an firewall.
by other hand, if your wireless doesn't have an built-in dsl modem, then you have another device that also may act also an firewall. if is this the case, you may do an simple test, by attaching that device in one or your machines and trying again, without the wireless router.
anyway, please take a look at your wireless modem and check every single screen of it looking for firewall and disable it, at least, also an test
