tracert www.autopatcher.com
as result, you will get something like this:
tracking route for autopatcher.com [208.43.166.248] 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.0.0.2 -> our proxy 2 * * * Time out -> our modem. and as you can see, i'm unable to reach itthe next jumps should be over internet. and, also you can see, i'm behind 2 things that acts like firewalls and i'm unable to run apup even if i try make some sort of tunneling. just try do the same. it can help you to track where is the issue that is blocking apup

but still, that tool only will tell the basic thing that we are trying to tell you: you don't have an direct IC. neither i have it at home, but certain configs at my router bypass that issue. but the same thing isn't true for all routers, that may act also an firewall and you even know it

just an hint: try search for tracert.exe under c:\windows\system32 in that machine. if the file is in there and isn't working, problem. your issue can be deeper. maybe some viral infection or something has corrupted your system
by the way, i didn't born speaking english. sometimes, i just wrote also i could say the same thing in my own language, but in certain cases, some sentences can be written in the wrong form. so, no offence taken

I did find tracert.exe in system32. But as soon as I tried to execute it i, I see a quick flash of the cmd and than nothing.
What dies this mean?
What can I do about it?

tracert www.autopatcher.com > result.txt
the > command will redirect the result to an txt file, named result.txt. the file will be in the same folder where you you run the .cmd file or even the tracert command himself. attached to this post is the .cmd file that will do the job. with that, you will just require unzip it in the folder where is tracert
still, this command only will show to you the route to our site, allowing you discover if there's something between your machine and internet
by the way, it may take a few minutes to complete all the jumps

It is true in some countries, the US included, when someone addresses another and uses the word "pal" it can be looked at as saying -
"hey dummy, why aren't you listening to me!" This is not how Cristiano uses the word.

The path or "environment variable" should be set during the installation of Windows XP. If you do have the exe files but no
path set to run them via "cmd", this could be due to a "hacked-up" XP disk ie: tinyxp, nlited to death, or...?
The link above should provide a way to reset the path if the path should be missing - it is explained in detail. If after resetting the
path to tracert.exe you still can't run it - you have bigger problems. If you do own a "legit" and "complete" XP install CD you may
want to reinstall XP, but don't do anything that drastic just yet.

I have solved the problem with my cmd prompt. The Path was corrupt, I put in the right path and now tracert etc is working.
Apup however gives the same error.

word: pal
portuguese translations:
1. amigo (friend)
2. camarada (comrade)
edit:
mariner, also you can see by your tracert log, takes 1 7 ms to the command reaches your dsl modem. in an direct IC, that takes something like >1ms. so, surely something between your machine and dsl modem is acting like an proxy, analyzing and routing. but routing with an firewall and locking apup. surely, this issue is related to something in your machine.

Ok thanks,
but how do I find out where in the firewall apup is blocked? I have only 1 firewall woking : GData. The router firewall is switched off temperarely. And for Gdata I have made a allow rule for apup.
I don't know what to do else.

because most of the windows processes will be closed (i'm unsure about certain features of windows home networking, that it's active in your system), you at least may learn if the issue is related to gdata or if it is related to something else
by the way, silly me... i was forgetting that i can test if gdata is an issue
1 - your router;
2 - something in the configuration of your home network
but my lunch time is short and the download will take some time, so i just will be able to finish the test tonight.
edit: forget about the 17ms by some time. right now, while i'm downloading gdata total care 2009, that i was able to find at softpedia, i'm getting the same tracert time to my router. the backup of my spare machine is already done and also the clean ghost image for that machine is already in place, waiting for the download finish. it will take at least 20 minutes more, but i'm not sure if i will be able to stay at home for that long

your last reply triggered something in me, one word: safemode.
So I restarted windows in the safe mode and while I am writing this thread on my MBP, on my desktop windows is downloading its updates via apup.exe.
I know this is only a kind of bypass solution,but it is working!
I have no problem to continue working on a permanent solution (windows in normal mode)
I can understand it that you may be a little bit fedup with it.
So I will await your latest effort posted in your last thread. But I can live with the safemode solution.

just an silly question: when you was configuring your home network, you did that with the home network wizard? sometimes, that tool can do that too. if this is the case, it's very easy to undo the mistakes that this tool does, but all your home network configuration will be lost and you will be required to do it by hand (that is the way that i do)
and, by the way, gdata was active during safe mode?

Can you get a screenshot of the services running in a "normal" boot process and then do the same while in "safe mode"?
You may need to do the same here as with tracert.
"Start" - "Run" - services.msc
Or...
Make a note of all services running ie; Started while in normal mode and then while in safe mode see which services have
been shut down ie; Stopped, it may also show as Disabled. It is likely one of these services that have been Stopped that
is the offender.
Generic Example:
Service Name-------------Normal Mode------------------Safe Mode
gdata.exe------------------Started------------------Stopped/Disabled

It was done manually on the desktop and Apple had its own way of configuring the MBP. Anyhow I did not use the wizard.
I can't remember for sure if Gdata was on in safemode. Believe it was off. Check it out tomorrow,my desktop is off at this moment. Will check out the services too.

1 - open gdata main control. for the version that i've tried, it was done by right-clicking the G icon at tray and selecting "start gdata total care";
2 - hit firewall, rule sets;
3 - highlight "direct internet connection" and double-click it;
4 - choose:
4.1 - "allow or deny access to an specific application" and hit "next";
4.2.1 - for path, find the folder where is apup and select it;
4.2.2 - for direction of connection, choose "in/outbound connection" and hit "next";
5 - for the question "do you want to allow or deny access", answer "allow" and hit "finish".
after that, issue solved.
by the way: without that rule, disable firewall didn't worked. apup was still blocked. so, surely, gdata firewall isn't disabled at all even if you choose disable firewall.
another thing: gdata is disabled when you run windows in safe mode, with network active. due that, even without an rule, apup worked.
problem: if you did the rule and it didn't worked at first time, then the issue is surely related to an windows service. the problem will be find it...
now, restore my ghost...
