Hi all. I am a new member and was referred to you from someone on the dell community site. My problem is that i get the update message for SP1 and i download and install it with no problems, but when i try to access internet explorer i get the error message (internet explorer was closed to help protect your computer. Data Execution Prevention has closed internet explorer).

I then done a restore and everything works fine. It was suggested on the dell community forum that i might be missing some prior updates and to try the autopatch.

Could someone direct me to the link to download the 32-bit autopatch and any other instructions that i should know as i am a newbie when it comes to pcs.

I am running a dell with windows vista home premium, dimension E520.

Thanks in advance to any help that anyone can give me.

What does Dell tech support say about your error message, don't they customize the OEM operating system installs?

Did you try to use Windows Update / Microsoft Update to update Internet Explorer? It sounds more like a"permissions" or
"security" issue to me.

Anyway, maybe AutoPatcher can get you updated. Please read post #1 to make sure you understand a few things about the
service pack levels in Vista, the 2 warnings near the bottom - 2 warnings!

thanks for the reply gUiTaR_mIKE. I never talked to dell tech support about the problem. I was into a dell community forum and someone just suggested the autopatch.

I have not tried the windows update/microsoft update yet, but i will try that now to see if that will help.

from the experience that i have with Dell machines, just one advice: go to Dell website and enter your service tag. then, download all the required drivers to your system and save it. after that, do an full format in your system partition and install all over again, with an original windows cd, without that Dell crapware. yes, i'm telling to you completely forgot about Dell restore cd and all that stuff. the problem is that Dell installs so much crapware and change too much things to tell you that by installing something you may be free of issues, if you choose one path or another. that issue that you are having is related to UAC, that can be turned off and it will bypass your issue. but you can't be sure that UAC is locking IE by nothing. it can be related to Google Desktop (that at least in Brazil us to be installed with other Dell crapware) or it can be related to another thing that Dell did. of course, it may be related to any sort of malware too.

also, you may try the link to IE without complements (iexplore.exe -extoff). that link us to be located at system tools. if, by running IE without any complements it works, you may point to you an way to fix this issue without an full reinstall, just removing the complements. also, you may remove all complements by going to control panel, (classic view), internet options, advanced, reset IE to default settings button.

ok, an full anti-virus scan is advisable too.

I read the thread on the Dell forums, I get the impression you might be a hands-off kinda person, normally not a problem but,
when it comes to technical stuff, understanding what needs to be done PRIOR to doing it, and asking questions upfront etc is
critical.

For instance, did you ask Dell Tech or the forum community "what should I disable before installing SP1" or "any adjustments
to settings I should make after SP1 is installed - recommendations please", "Is my E520 ready for SP1 with minimal problems".
This can inform you of what to expect during an update this critical - maybe even the DEP warnings.

BTW, you made an interesting comment on the Dell forum -> "everything stops working after I install the service pack", is
this true, if not don't exaggerate the problem rather be clear so the people who are trying to help you know exactly what is
happening. My question, is this DEP message when opening IE the only problem you are having, and it only happens AFTER
the installation of SP1, and the problem goes away when you restore your system yes/no? Also, the email issue - just the 2?

Did you install SP1 while online (assuming it can be installed this way) with all your security software running? You don't want
anything interfering with an update this important, I would recommend turning off as much as you can - AV, firewall etc. If you
haven't already, download the offline installer (assuming your language is supported / I believe there are 5 including English).

Also, are you running regular security checks to make sure your system is clean?

It seems this DEP issue and Vista is a regular occurance for many, some have disabled DEP before and after the installation of
SP1. Have you tried Firefox 3.0.11 to see if it will run, and maybe Thunderbird for mail - temporarily?

Bottom line: You may still have problems with DEP (data execution prevention) with a non oem Vista install but a full version is
the preferred option as Cristiano states. I would suggest you try a new browser and email program while you are determining
why Vista is preventing IE from functioning. I do think it is a simple fix but it will take someone who is familiar with the heavy
security measures built into Vista to help you solve what is wanting to run when IE is opening (it may be a program that didn't
properly install and is wanting to execute and Vista looks at it as malicious so it prevents it from running by closing IE).

My opinion is Vista is not for the hands-off type (unless you have a tech in the family). You will need to learn how to take control
of Vista (unlike previous OSes that were pretty easy to tame) and demand it work as you prefer and not how Microsoft set it up
by default, but this takes some learning.

Sorry, my mistake, it is SP2 for Vista that comes in 5 languages (at the moment) and not SP1.

You may have "Memory Protection" enabled in Internet Explorer, let's see if disabling it will allow IE to run.

If you can, start IE 7 / 8 - (without add-ons)

Go to "Tools" - "Internet Options" - "Advanced" -> and look for a slide type pulldown menu

Look for and see if there is a checkmark for "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks."

If you find that "Enable Memory Protection" is checked (enabled) - uncheck (disable) it

Close IE - you may also need to reboot your PC. When opening IE after disabling "Memory Protection" leaves you
with the same problem, check the box once again to "Enable Memory Protection". You will at least have eliminated
1 possibility for the error.
