hello all
first of all, i just bought my first laptop, not anything fancy, just a very basic, simple and cheap model from acer.
full type is travelmate 5330-571g16mi with 4 gigabytes of memory.
by investing on extra memory i ofcourse wanted to get everything out of it, so i hunted down for win xp x64 platform from various torrent sources.
laptop came with basic vista system which i do not like, so i turned on old work horse xp, but by doing so i had to turn on x64 platform, right?
so i found one which sounded very good, it was also very light, everything extra had been stripped off, it runs under name superior xp64.
at first everything looked well, it is fast as hell and indeed stripped off from everything useless. in the instructions the developers suggested this very site to get system up to date, so here i am, first started with apup.zip and so on, everything did not go as they should have gone, but more or less i got the job done until this point. aaargh, i assumed that when i checked my computer and properties it would say that there is 4 gigabytes of memory available, but instead it told that there is only 3 gigabytes of memory, s h i t, deep s h i t. so i have to ask for help from you, am i just stupid or have i done something wrong in the process?
on the instructions there is quote
** This Windows version is designed to work with 64-bit processors from AMD and
Intel that support the x64 extensions to the x86 architecture. These include
the Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, Mobile Athlon 64, Turion 64, Opteron processors
from AMD, and all Xeon, Pentium 4, Dual and Quad Core Intel CPU's with EM64T.
i ripped off every sticker from top of this laptop and one was intel celeron, so is that the reason why this xp does not use full 4 gigabyte of memory capacity, does this laptop have cpu with em64t? for novice like me this em64t does not tell very much, more or less i dont know what it means.
hopefully even one of you experts have time to read this question and maybe tell some even good news for me.

Hi guruguru,
And welcome.
I do not think that this is the place to ask questions about setting up your system.
But, just this once, I think the answer to your question is that the default settings for Windows is to use the max for x32 systems (ie 3Gb).
The way to get round this is to do the following:
1. Run MSConfig
a. WinKey+R
or
b. Start -> Run
and then type msconfig in the textbox.
2. Click on the BOOT.INI tab
3. Click the Advanced Options Button
4. Make sure that /MAXMEM= is ticked
5. Enter 4096 in the textbox next to /MAXMEM=
6. Click OK
7. Click OK
8. Reboot your system
9. When the system has restarted and you are in windows, you will receive a confirmation popup window. To stop the confirmation window popping up every time you load windows, you should tick the box next to "Do not show this message or..." at the bottom and Click OK.

Let me know if this has worked.
If not you can try searching on google...

That sounds wierd.
I have 8GB and when I view my "System Properties" it shows 7.00 GB.
Maybe its your processor. It may not be compatible with 64bit.
Have a look at this site
Tom's Guide
There are plenty of System Information Software available on the net (EVEREST, SIW, AIDA32, ASTRA, Belarc, MEMORyAL)
Some are free others are shareware.
Do a search for these in Google.
Sorry cannot be of further help.

I did a Google search on the Acer model number you gave and I would have to say it is NOT a 64-bit capable system. Better check the owner's manual and read the invoice to verify but either you or the place you bouhgt it from made a major mistake.

that sound bad, i will call the store to verify where we stand on the 64bit system problem.
if it is that simple that this laptop does not support 64bit platform, why can i still use it without any problems so far except the memory issue?
anyway, i must thank you both very much for seeking answers to this problem.
