i had one problem, solved it and want to share info
when i wanted to download updates autopatcher was giving many error messages like:
"Application Error
Permission denied
in ..."
problem was solved when i closed antivirus
i have kaspersky but this may apply to other antiviruses
pause/stop wont help, u have to shut down antivirus
in case of kaspersky u must right click on kaspersky's icon on bottom right corner of screen and click "Exit"

i've tried Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 a couple of weeks ago and i didn't had any issues like those. but kaspersky (despite be an very good av) has one of the worstest firewalls that i've seen. first of all, it prevent things from going out, but not all things from come in. take a look at the firewall rules and you will see that it just look for the most common ports. ok, you can change that to an safer option, but the automatic rules doesn't work well either. in my tests, i had to set to offer options and, to apup, i've selected the allow rule. for sure, even if you have chosen an wrong rule, it can be fixed at firewall options. but the problem will not stop in here. for every single download, kaspersky open an window to the temporary file created to do the download and, after a dozen of downloads, it becomes annoying. if the task takes longer, you will see the kaspersky screen even after the app close...

you know, you don't need close any firewall, just do proper rules to everything. but in my personal point of view, i was inclined to buy kaspersky before test it, but i've removed it from my test machine before end the trial period. and it will not come back before an new engine be released (that probably will be in 2010)

so, probably the issue was related to the stop script feature that kaspersky has. good to know. i believe that next week i will rebuild some vms again. then, i will install kas trial in order to take the required configs to allow apup work without close kas. but i will not promise a date for it, since i'm out of time since a couple of weeks ago and this issue may not be solved so soon...

Thank you Kosta. Your post solved my problem too.

(Mine was being created by Norton AntiBot though)

Thank you very much.

just an follow up: i did an test with kas IS 2010 trial. trust apup didn't worked. make an exception for apup didn't worked. disable all functions from kas didn't worked, pause protection didn't worked. the only one option that worked was exit from kis. honestly, i've tried found an bypass to this issue, but i didn't found one. an idea: report that into kas forum

thanks
