If you extracted everything from the .zip file to an empty folder, then there should be no other folder aside from apup_bin, and that folder should be filled with uz.exe and the likes, not empty.

correct - there must be only one directory apup_bin, it must something look like this

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is CC4D-3217

This is frustrating ...
I downloaded APUP.zip (706 KB) from the URL, exploded the zip into a brand new directory, then tried to run APUP the first time from the Start / Run /Brouse to new directory with apup.exe and a blank Bin folder. I added "space forward slash log" argument and got a "file not found apup.exe /log" in a dialog box. I did this several times and got the same results. Help, if you can .....

Hi Bubba,

when you extract the zip into a new folder, you must only have apup.exe and a subdirectory called apup_bin, if not the extract went pear shaped.

Directory of C:\apup

13/12/2007 02:24 PM 167,936 apup.exe

C:\apup\apup_bin

13/12/2007 02:24 PM 10,752 aamd532.dll
13/12/2007 02:24 PM 140,800 CAPCAB.EXE
13/12/2007 02:24 PM 1,077,344 MSCOMCTL.OCX
13/12/2007 02:24 PM 124,688 MSWINSCK.OCX
13/12/2007 02:24 PM 73,728 uz.exe

5 File(s) 1,427,312 bytes

Total Files Listed:
6 File(s) 1,595,248 bytes

as soon as you got this, you would be ready to go, if not the apup.exe /log will give errors, because it could not find the relevant dll's etc.

Hi everyone,

The new apup and 3.4 update is AWESOME!!!

I have found one problem with the dotnet fix. I am getting a runtime0 error immediately as I execute apup with only the dotnet fix checked. I have not done a log but shall. Keep up the excellent work. I appreciate you all!!!

OOPS, my typo, so let me start again

I downloaded APUP.zip (706 KB) from the URL, exploded the zip into a brand new directory, where it created an apup.exe and a apup_bin folder with the five (5) described files in it. I then tried to run APUP.exe the first time from the Start / Run /Brouse to new directory with apup.exe . I added "space forward slash log" argument to apup.exe and got a "file not found apup.exe /log" in a dialog box.

So then I tried to run APUP.exe the second time from the Start / Run /Brouse to new directory but without the "/log" switch. This time it accessed the AP Updater, and I ONLY selected the AP Updater & Engine (yes I did scroll to the bottom) dated 30 Nov & 12 Dec.

This resulted in 170MB being downloaded, 3 files being added to the root (apup.script, apengine.script. and releases.list) AND the addition of two (2) folders (bin and translations) BOTH with zero files in them

Hopefully this is more concise.

It looks like we are moving forward step by step.

Create a shortcut on your desktop with the log option. In my case its F:\AutoPatcher\XP\apup.exe /log in the target

it seems that the system does not extract the zip files.

Only run the extract for the AP Updater & Engine again

please post log file content here

APUP downloaded the dotnet 3.5 2.0 and 1.1 files but autopatcher is not showing an option to install 2.0
I do have 2.0 pre SP1 installed on this system.

dotnet 2.0 is included with dotnet 3.5. The only reason 2.0 was added was for Windows 2000 compatability which 3.5 doesn't support. If you install 3.5, you will be good to go =)
Quote

FrizzleFry's Photo FrizzleFry 14 Dec 2007

I realize that installing .net 3.5 also installs 2.0 but so far no programs I run require 3.0 or 3.5 so I usually just install 2.0. Couldn't we had this option in AutoPatcher?

Try running it with /log outside the double quotes --> "C:\Program Files\AutoPatcher\apup.exe" /log
You probably tried to run it with /log inside the double quotes.

It should be 3 Dec for AP Updater and 30 Nov for AP Engine. =)
12 Dec is probably the update for Windows.

I myself downloaded only 1.7MB of files when selecting only those two in an empty folder; are you sure the 170MB file size is not a typo?

@FrizzleFry
Why bother?
It's less clutter to just install .NET 3.5.
Besides, it's not like it'll break your .NET 2.0 programs.

To Rudy, Cyrus & Sh1leshk4:

First, thanks for all your collective help & advice.
But for reasons unknown, my AP attempts failed to populate all directories properly 6 or 7 times. And for now even more of a mystery, when I was finally able to get the /log switch to see what the frick it was doing, all worked PERFECTLY, start to finish, first time.

So just for ###### andd giggles, I then tried to go thru the same process again WITHOUT the /log switch and AP bombed again resulting in blank BIN and TRANSLATION directories. What the /log switch has to do with AP downloading properly and populating directories is way over my head. Seems to make NO sense whatsoever.

But I now have a fully working copy of AP, backed up so I never have to go thru this nonesense ever again, and am grateful to the 3 of you for helping.

Well, it's good to hear everything finally worked fine, though that is one of the weirdest apup.exe behavior I've ever heard... xD

In order to decrease the size of the download (all of the English updates add up to ~1.8 GB) they don't include separate updates if it's in a larger compilation. If you install .NET 3.5 all of your older .NET programs will still work just fine.

I can't seem to get the new AP to work...basically it just hangs at some point during downloading the various modules. I've gotten further along by following some of the other advice about just updating the engine and AP first, but then it still just hangs at some random point during the downloads. The logs don't appear to help as it shows things downloading and then it jsut cuts off mid-sentence when it hangs. I've deleted everything and started from scratch several times already with the same results. Any thoughts or suggestions?? I've missed having AP and would love to get back in the game! Thanks.

brewerg, apup still have some issues with answers from servers. basically, it works like this:
- apup try download something from an overloaded server;
- server says to apup that the requested download was moved (that may be temporally moved or an permanent move);
- apup don't know how to deal with the 'moved' information and crashes.

it may be a little difficult test that with ms download servers, since the download locations seems the same (that moved is transparent to the user), but this can be forced, choosing an download location that always will give you an 'moved' info, like this one:
http://javadl.sun.co...?BundleId=12798

i believe that apup is beeing updated to avoid this things, but currently, it is still an beta software and until an fixed version arrives, in order to apup works you may need be a lot persistent, according to ms servers overloads. so, don't delete the already downloaded modules and try, try again. apup will check the md5 of the files and if it doesn't math, it will download again. so, don't worry, it will be fixed soon or later

Oh, $hit, here we go again. Finally got AP to work for WinXp-x32 and thought I'd be so bold as to try getting and doing office updates for 2003 & 2007. So I ran APUP and only checked Office 2003, 2007, and 2007 SP-1 boxes. When I was done I had the following:

2007 - In a new "Module" subdirectory, 8 !SP folders, 1KB folder and, 1 !SP APM file

2003 - In a new "Module" subdirectory, 7 !SP folders, 1 KB folder, and, 8 !SP APM files

So I then ran Autopatcher and when I got to the items to check for install, listings for Office 2003, Office 2003 Viewers, Office 2007, and 2007 Compatibility Pack were there. Office 2003 Viewers had 1 Web item, Ofice 2003 had 4 SP-3 items, but under Office 2007 and 2007 Compatability Pack there were NO items (in blue or black) under them to select - they were blank.

So I deleted the module directories only for 2007 and started APUP from the beginning all over again - but got the same result for Office 2007 as above when I ran Autopatcher.

Suggestions for Office 2007 & 2007 SP-1 (other than slit my wrists) ????

Because the reason Office 2007 doesn't show up in AP might be because you don't have Office 2007 installed.

Then it might be something with the registry and/or file detection.
Just check the .apm files whether the registry and/or file detection is already correct or not.

And I might not need to ask this but, your Office 2007 is an English version, right?
Because current AP won't detect other versions of Office 2007 other than the English release, as Erik said.

Yes, Win-XP, Office 2003, and Office 2007 are all native english.

But as I mentioned above, Office 2007's directory seems "odd" because it has only 1 APM file (for the Accounting application - which I do NOT have installed). Not being a techie, I suspect I need "APM's" for the other seven (7) !SP 1KB9xxxxx's that are also in the Office 2007 directory.

Since I have downloaded (from APUP) Office 2007 three (3) times, and only one APM is ever downloaded, is there somewhere else I can get these seven (7) files, stuff them into the Office 2007 directory, and see if that's the problem?
Thanks.
