Hi. I'm a newcomer to AutoPatcher. And it looks like I need some help.

Issue, ran AUP, then did the installs after carefully selecting all but a couple updates. The update process ran smoothly. Kind of a neat system this AutoPatcher.

But when I ran Belarc afterward, it says have 13 missing files and need to reinstall the Rollover 1 SP4(Sp5). ??

Not sure what to do now. Should I reinstall the rollover 1 SP4?
And what should I do for the other items? I am avoiding using any media player above v6.4 and trying to stay away from any of the troublesome or less reputable updates. I don't use IE for anything, block ActiveX all the time (except that needed to allow it for AUP to work. But sure why that was necessary, but I also left it unblocked during the autopatcher install.

Overview:
Just brought an older machine up as a W2k machine with the original MS CD with SP2, did the 5 critical updates before letting the machine see the internet. And installed FW & AV etc also before opening the door to the world.
1)) W2KSP4_EN.EXE
2)) Windows2000-KB828035-x86-ENU.exe
3)) Windows2000-KB828749-x86-ENU.exe
4)) Windows2000-KB891861-v2-x86-ENU.EXE
5)) Windows2000-KB958644-x86-ENU(2).EXE

Then proceeded to install the programs I need on it. After that I did the Autopatcher update system. But... now a curiosity.

Belarc says these items are missing: & has a red "X" in front of the rollup1 SP4 and says to reinstal the rollup.

I'm not sure what to do now. Re-running Autopatcher didn't show anything wrong. So who do I believe on this?

thanks
Sandy

The list of updates that Belarc is showing as not installed can be divided into two:
(1) Early updates; and
(2) Latest updates

(1) Belarc is most likely right for the early updates.
The list shown is consistent with the Update Rollup (kb891861-v2) not being properly installed. Check the log file produced when this update was installed -- look for it in the WINNT system folder -- it should show why it has not installed and what is missing. It will have a name something like KB891861.log Re-install this update.

(2) Belarc is right for the latest updates, too, but in a different sense. Belarc shows updates that have been released by Microsoft after the last update to Apup/AutoPatcher. The Windows 2000 Apup/AutoPatcher release is a little out-of-date at the moment.

James,

Thanks for your reply. I will look up the issues with the rollup 1 SP4 and see what the system says. And I understand the time-date sync affecting newer MS updates. So those are not a problem for now. It just ends up being the rollup & the older ones.

Curiously, there were no indications of problems when I first installed the rollup. And the Belarc report that I did before the AP update showed the rollup1 correctly installed. ?? It wiuld appear that something changed the previously ok rollup 1 install, or more specifically interfered with some item(s) that it had installed.

That Belarc report was generated and saved after the first updates and after installing most of the standard programs I will use on the machine. I had run the AV checks, SpyBot, & OutPost spyware checker during and after those installs. OP did find an Alexa, an autododer & a "mywebsearch". Am pretty sure the Alexa came from the mbd driver CD. I think that the "mywebsearch" came from the Foxit 3,0 pdf reader install But no idea on the autododer. SpyBot found nothing, Nod32 Av found nothing. Only teh OP spyware check found these 3 items which I quarantined. Other than that the machine creation went decently smoothly.

Of the older updates in that list which do i really want to instal? Note that I am avoiding some of the more obnoxious MS updates on purpose. makes me feel better to try and avoid invasive things. But I'm not sure how explicit I should be on that in this forum, even though this is just w2k.

I appreciate the help. Thanks

On the KB891861 log suggested above:

Just looked thru the WINNT directory for a log on KB891861. But I found no logs for it or the sub dirs. There is the uninstal directory for the rollup, but no log files in it. The only log files I found in WINNT were the Autopatcher log and a Windows Update log. The latter is a curiosity to me and am not sure what its purpose is. It seems to contain entries for machine boots v=but it's certainly not easy to decipher much.

thanks again.

My mistake. KB891861 has a non-standard log-file name.

It's called UpdateRollupPack.log not KB891861.log.

James,

I searched the entire C: partition on that machine and oon this one and I can't find any logs that relate to any updates.

The only thing that I can find anywhere close to that name is the uninstall directory $NtUpdateRollupPackUninstall$

btw I don't need to keep those uninstall directories do I? Nor do I need to keep the uninstall entries in the "Add-Remove" list either do I? I don't expect to have to remove these older updates.

Is there a downside to reinstalling the rollup ?

thanks

That's not usual. All Microsoft updates write an install log to \WINNT (Windows 2000) or \WINDOWS (Windows XP). At the same time, they create an uninstall folder $Ntzzzzzz...... Maybe something (AV? AntiMalware?) is blocking writes to the system files folders?

Correct -- If you are short of disk space and understand that you can then never uninstall them.

Not that I know of

James,

Ok, thanks. I will reinstall the rollup, then look at the older missing items and see which ones seem the safest. And istall the ones that go with IE6 at least.

In the recommended section of the updates are there any that I really will want?

A appreciate this help. Thanks again.

Sandy

James,

Well progress !!! :)

reinstalled the rollup. the red "X" is now gone and two previously "missing" hot fixes now show as installed.

Sorted thru the list of remaining missing items. Kind of a pain to do to have to manually cross reference the Q #'s to the MB0x-0xx nomenclature. But the details links in the Belarc report help with that. One of the confusing aspects is that the MS09-037 covers 4 updates not the expected one. Did MS do that just to confuse me???

So now I have just 2 older items and 9 items from this August 11th. Glad to have that sorted thru. I will install the two older items next.

Older items:
Q905495 - Moderate MS05-044: Vulnerability in the Windows FTP client could allow file transfer location tampering

Q938464 - Critical MS08-052: Description of the security update for GDI+ for all editions of Windows XP, of Windows Vista, of Windows Server

So with your help I've made a lot of progress and it does look like this was well worth getting straightened out.
Not sure whether I will do the Aug 11 updates now manually or not (I did DL the related hotfix files for each of them), One of them related to media player 9 But anything MEdia player 9 is on my DO NOT LET IT IN list. So I will probably skip that one.

Well with your help I am getting closer to installing my antique Office 2000, Dreamweaver and Photoshop.

Thanks again. I do appreciate the help.
Sandy
