> that wasn't to much to download

check again. there's several updates for this one and some of them you only will see in a 2nd or 3rd run of windows update. but ok, some of the downloads could be related to dell crapware
> Nero 6 was a good program for me
for me too. but "was" is the right term for it. it doesn't fit for vista and beyond. the results are bsod etc etc etc

As a Win7 HP X64 user and former Nero user might I suggest you go to ninite.com and try out IMGBurn? It is totally free, and for a former Nero User it is quite nice and has features that make it IMHO better than Nero. Most importantly Nero has a MAX of 80Mb buffering, whereas IMGBurn allows up to 512Mb. Since switching I have yet to make a single coaster no matter how many tasks I have going while burning. Really nice. There are a ton of free programs there to choose from and most importantly NO TOOLBARS. The ninite installer sets everything up without getting those lousy toolbars that so many programs like Java and CCleaner come with now.
As for more memory? I highly recommend it. I have found that with my setup (AMD Deneb 925 quad, 780V mobo, dual 500Gb drives, 4650 1Gb) that going from 4Gb to 8Gb did make everything even more snappy. I have found that unlike Vista the superfetch on Win7 actually works quite well and has learned my programs and keeps the most used ready to go in memory. There is also Readyboost, and I would recommend having any decent 4-16Gb drive used for it if you have one to spare. It won't make a huge difference, but I have found that by using the much faster SSD for Superfetch and frequently used .dlls with Readyboost it does make coming out of sleep faster. Also if you are a gamer or are running really memory intensive apps I would suggest Tuneup Utilities 2010, which is $30 but well worth it thanks to "turbo mode", which is a one click tray button that shuts down memory intensive background tasks and gives priority to your app. Plus it does nice features in the background like find and remove orphan shortcuts and monitors HDD SMART data.
Anyway good luck on your new Win7 x64. I have also found it to be much better than XP or Vista when it comes to performance as well as look and feel. I like the new Win7 x64 so much I went out and bought the family pack and switched my family over. The increased security and stability were WELL worth it, especially for my dad who can crash XP like you would not believe. Good luck and I hope you try IMGBurn. It will burn just about any kind of data and is pretty foolproof. Good luck!

Hi again! What you need to fix the shutdown problem is this, the Windows club Windows Tweaker. It is designed to tell if you are running Vista or 7, and only offer you the relevant fixes. It also has a handy create restore point option and any fix can be undone if you decide later you don't want it. But it has fixes for the most common WinVista and Win7 problems including the shutdown hang bug. It is rare but as you have found it is a PITA if it happens. But it is a really nice tool to have if you are running Vista or 7. Only 350k, no need to install, and over 150 tweaks that let you fix and customize everything from UAC to network settings. The tweak you are wanting is under "system performance and will allow you to set auto end hung apps/services as well as dial in exactly how long Windows waits via a slider. I hope this helps!

non-admin I do believe there are limitations on what CCleaner can clean but if run as an admin both work the same as the
full installer - so I'm told anyway. The full installer will not install without admin rights I believe.
Also, the Java packaged in the AutoPatcher release doesn't install a toolbar.
BTW, I really like Windows 7 so far but to fully realize it's potential don't under build a system, it will never function
like it does in any presentation video for the OS.

While I keep the portable version on my flash (along with my full PC repair toolkit) for cleaning customer's PCs I have found Ninite really great for sending a link to the friends/relatives that just aren't PC savvy. They have over 90 of the most commonly used apps (Firefox, CCleaner, Flash/shockwave, Java, etc) and since there isn't any toolbars you can just send it to them without having to say "And on the third screen uncheck the fourth box" and just let Ninite do all the work.
I agree about the system reqs as well. I tell my customers a minimum dual core and 3Gb for the x86 version, 4Gb for x64. I am running an AMD quad with 8Gb of RAM and Windows 7 flies and is MUCH nicer than either XP x64 or Vista x64. XP x64 ran with very low resources but didn't have the niceties like WMC, and no matter how much I tweaked even with 4Gb of RAM Vista x64 thrashed the HDD like there was no tomorrow. Windows 7 is faster, more efficient, and the UAC doesn't drive me nuts like Vista. And with AMD quads starting at just $100 and RAM and GPUs being so cheap, why starve your system? I paid a whole $60 for 8Gb of RAM, and my 1Gb 4650 was $35 after rebate. In this day and age it just doesn't make sense to starve a system when Windows 7 can handle scaling so nicely.
BTW if you haven't tried Readyboost I recommend it. Even with 8Gb of RAM I've found having an 8Gb Readyboost drive makes suspend/resume (thanks to hybrid sleep) and my most commonly used tasks run faster thanks to the speed of SSD over HDD when it comes to random reads. It is like buying 8Gb of SSD cache for your drives without the added expense of going full hybrid drives. The speed boost isn't a lot but it is noticeable, and with flash sticks at $20 for 8Gb it is silly IMHO not to take advantage of such an easy speed boost.

I don't use online installer to install program I can download and install myself. I would say if you can't figure out what to install and have to use ninite then your not a very good computer user. I already have Imgburn but that program has it limitation compared to the full Nero 9 Reloaded program.
