I had an updated XP SP2 (using Autopatcher) long back. Once SP3 came out I did not update because I read somewhere that on AMD Dual Core systems (I have Athlon X2 3600+) it led to infinite reboot loops. Yesterday I thought it is time to take the risk and ran APUP 1.1 Autopatcher engine and SP3 were selected. I gave the go ahead, all modules were downloaded and installed. On rebooting right clicking My Computer still shows it as SP2.
What I wonder is is my system now SP2 or SP3?

that is related to an intel driver... don't ask me why, but certain oem machines was sold pre-installed running an intel driver, that leads to this problem. it's very easy to fix, just open an console prompt and type this:
sc config intelppm start= disabled
but just do that if you have problems like infinite reboots and you have an amd processor running an OEM version of windows xp

your system is still SP2. the script aims SP3, but certain updates works under SP2. but autopatcher doesn't install nor download SP3

Boss! Thank you. So I shall just keep updating using apup and not worry about if it shows SP2 or SP3.

well, also i've said, the script aims sp3. that means that all the updates between sp2 and sp3 aren't in place, despite certain updates work under sp2. but you can download sp3 from here. worst: without it, your system will be lacking important updates

Thanks a lot for that SP3 link. Installed without any catastrophe. Also ran APUP and few remaining updates without any trouble.
