Some updates not installed, error in log file

Phariset's Photo Phariset 09 Feb 2010

ok so, I'm using autopatcher with the following switches on a fresh install of xp home sp3

/noeula /unattend:t3 /log /defaults:C:\install\save.aaf

This is what is happening.

IE8 doesnt get installed and a bunch of other updates dont either. Seems like most of the recommended updates dont get done.

I opened up the autopatcher.log file and it only has a few lines it in and one error. It says (this isnt exact).

The following update kb895181* is reporting this module as its parent but no such module exsts.

The update appears to be an update to wmp10 which of course doesnt get installed since wmp11 is installed, however i cannot find that kb895181 referenced in autopatcher anywhere so i dont know how to tell it not to download or install it.

I'm not sure if this is hanging the program or not.

Here is an update.

I formatted and reinstalled xp home on the target system (thank god for flash drive installs) and then ran autopatcher, using the same save file but WITHOUT any switches (no unattended noeula etc etc) just in its default state and it installed everything it hsould, including IE8, wga and everything else (WGA was another component that didnt get installed before). I tried to watch the entire install and i did not see a reference to that file i mentioned above, the wmp10 update so I have no idea why the autopatcher.log was generating that errror or not working at all.

Any thoughts?

My next step is to format the computer again and JUST use the unattend:t3 switch and load my save file again, i wont use /noeula or any other switches. I have a feeling my issue is related to the unattend switch but i cant find a reason for it.

I will update again once that is complete.

See ya in 20 minutes.

Ok so I think i figured out what is going on.

When i dont do unattended and load my save file, theres 90 modules to install.

When i do unattended and use a switch to load my save file, theres 65 modules...so tons are getting skipped.

I opened up my save file in notepad and there is just a list of all the files supposed to be installed...theres 90 in total.

So i think the problem is that my save file isnt getting loaded.

Is this command line argument correct?

autopatcher.exe /defaults:c:\install\save.aaf

Thanks

please, take a look at autopatcher folder, under modules\NonCritical\__WMP_noncritical and look if you have those files __WMP10_noncritical.apm and __WMP11_noncritical.apm . if you have those, you should not have any issue with kb895181. this module is being downloaded. so, as an guess, you may have an old version

> So i think the problem is that my save file isnt getting loaded
maybe not. certain updates require than another update be in place to be installed. if those updates aren't in place, then certain updates will not load, even if they are in the answers file (because the prereq is missing). the command that you is running doesn't seems ok. that /defaults doesn't exist. to load the answers file you should be running like this:
autopatcher /answerfile:<patch>

blahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

So after hours of searching and reinstalling i found out that /defaults no longer works and its /answerfile.

This solved 99% of my issues.

The last problem i ran into was that the WGA install (windows genuine advantage) is not unattended. It asks me to accept the eula and then click next a few times. Any way to automate that?

thanks

*ran into another issue now. ran the program and it said 90 modules which is the correct amount. Rebooted pc and went to windows updates and there was still 22 updates (there should be about 6), quite a few of them were net framework including the big Net framework 3.5sp1 which was supposed to be installed already from autopatcher. I have no idea why it wasnt installed.

> WGA
sadly, no. ms has removed the option for that

.net 3.5 sp1 us to require KB942288 in certain scenarios. please take a look on that

For the WGA, ill look into that. if its not do-able, ill skip it and just do it manually with the 2nd pass of updates.

For net framework. After a fresh install of windows xp with my flash drive, that update is there right away without any pre-reqs so it should be able to install right away with autopatcher. A reboot and running again shouldnt be neccessary. I think something else happened here...not sure but im trying another reinstall with the flags /unattend and /nolicense (i was previously using /unattend:t3 and /noeula...which seem to be discontinued).

This whole process when it works is amazing though. Those updates install in about 15 minutes, combine that with a 15 minute flash drive install and you have a fully updated windows xp home in 30 minutes...pretty awesome.

i think that before, the netframework was working when i did a manual run of autopatcher not using unattend but i will test to confirm.

thanks again,

For WGA, would this be possible?

http://www.robvander....php#WGAInstall

This procedure basically extracts the wga update, pulls the file inside that actually runs and then applies switches to make it silent.

I have no idea how i would personally make this work with autopatcher...probably something you guys would do? Also i dont know how old tha tpost is so maybe it doesnt work anymore.

I may test manually for that...yeah i will. Will update in a bit.

that may work, but i'm unsure about that. ms did an change into that way of deploy some time ago. but that will be tested

Actually i found something else.

I grabbed the WGA file that was in my autopatcher download, its update kb892130 and i just ran it with /passive and it installed silently. After i also ran kb898461 with /passive aswell (its the 2nd file that shows up when you have to download wga before windows updates shows you what updates you have/need). After running those 2 in /passive, i was able to load up windows update and have ti show updates right away without having to go through "download and install now" to install those 2 updates.

so this should be do-able with autopatcher.

kb898461 is downloaded. this one is at the non-critical updates, because this one requires validation in order to be downloaded. the first prereq to an file be in the critical updates is that the file shall not require any kind of validation to be downloaded. this one runs as /quiet /norestart /overwriteoem

> /passive
interesting. that will be tested

so everything went pretty well except for the following.

in add/remove programs, net framework 3.5 sp1 shows up, yet when i go to windows updates im still presented with the update KB892130 which also appears to be netframework3.5 sp1

so something is being fishy here.

next, wmp11 didnt install...but i MAY have forgot to check mark the box ;)

we'll see

> KB892130
this one is wga. kb905474 is the notification tool

> next, wmp11 didnt install
probably you have forgot to check. this one is around since a lot of time ago and no one had reported that issue so far

don't worry. windows updates sometimes say that wga is kb898461 (most of the times, actually)

Ok the one that isnt getting installed is kb951847 which is the netframework 3.5 sp1 which should have been installed from the script..not sure why it didnt. I guess it if gets installed on a 2nd reboot then thats fine since multiple reboots are required anyway. I just want to get as many updates done as possible before first reboot if possible. Maybe i can svcpack or cmdlines install that first netframework then

well, .net 3.5 sp1 is at the .net script, as .Net Framework 3.5 and can be located at components\.net . maybe this one wasn't downloaded or wasn't selected

> I just want to get as many updates done as possible before first reboot if possible
i did that list long ago. it includes all the critical, all the non critical, all the .nets, several of the components and some addons
