After installing IE8 through AutoPatcher I restarted my system only to find an iertutil.dll error was stopping explorer.exe and iexplore.exe from loading.

I used CRTL-ALT-DELETE to load Task Manager and was able to sort of work through the problem using the Browse and Run... what a mission! Hehehe

Having disabled System Restore I couldn't do a rollback, so I spent most of the afternoon figuring out how to resolve it.

I copied iertutil.dll from another WinXP installation to the system32 directory using Unlocker to remove the existing file.

I then kept getting the following error:

"The ordinal 685 could not be located in the dynamic library iertutil.dll"

Trying to reinstall IE8 from my AutoPatcher/Modules/Components/IE8_xp_x86_enu.apm_files directory kept failing telling me that Update.inf could not be loaded since the Cryptographic Service was not started. With explorer not loading the Services panel was inaccessible, and I discovered the service was failing with a Error 182 due to the same iertutil.dll file.

I eventually managed to resolve the issues by doing the following:

1. Deleted the Windows\System32\iertutil.dll using Unlocker utility

2. Ran the IE8 setup file from Modules/Components

3. Waited for files had been extracted to the temp folder, eg: C:\e7658g89fge8duhd etc etc

4. Copied iertutil.dll from IE8 setups temp folder to C:\Windows\System32 folder.

5. Cancelled IE8 installation.

6. Ran "Explorer.exe" and all worked!!!

GTalk raised an error with another IE file that seemed to be missing, so I started the Cryptographic Services and ran IE8 setup manually.

This resolved the GTalk error and system was 100% again.

Hope this saves someone the frustration I went through! :)

well, i've found this "The ordinal 685 could not be located in the dynamic library iertutil.dll" error in a machine from one of my clients. it wasn't related to any update, but due an file that he has removed with unlocker. the solution was kinda simple: i've booted his system with an boot cd with ntfs support (most of linux live cds will do nicely), did an search under c:\windows for iertutil.dll and realized that he had an version of this file, but the version that he had was a lot smaller than should be. so, i've selected from the other files with that name and picked the most up-to-dated, forgetting about one that was undersized and overwrite the version that was at system32

he also had system restore disabled, but the updates do an backup anyway, under c:\windows\$NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$ etc (it's an hidden folder). of course, the kb number changes

by the way: i have my doubts if this issue is really created by an update. if this was the cause, then a lot of people was complaining about that. worst: googling it, there's issues related to this file since 2006 and probably older than that.

but glad that you have found an solution for that :)
