frechetn's Photo frechetn 16 Aug 2010

Installed Win XP SP2, Downloaded and installed APUP then ran Autopatcher, rebooted, ran Autopatcher 2nd time, rebooted, ran Autopatcher a 3rd time then crash...

Why isn't Autopatcher for Windows XP SP2 being offered?

The following error appeared:

Attempting to initialize common controls.
Accessing filesystem...
AutoPatcher 5.6 loaded the filesystem.

why should? the target for autopatcher always was the latest public service pack for the target system. right now, even ms has dropped xp sp2

as for:
Module 'Update for Windows Media Player 9 or 10 (KB895181)' (unique id: 'KB895181_WMP10_X86_ENU') reports 'WMP10_NONCRITICAL_PARENT' as its parent, but such module does not exist or is not loaded in the right order

something is missing into your version. this file is being downloaded by the xp sp3 script

as for the crash, we need the data from the yikes screen, but as you are running sp2, my first guess goes to the lack of or even some outdated files. the ones that work are located under autopatcher\bin folder and several of those files should be at windows\system32

This issue has been lingering for a long time, over a year I bet. It has been in my AutoPatcher log for quite some time, I've ignored it because I don't use WMP.

I think I mentioned it when I had access to the hidden forums (I don't now) so I can't find my post. Here is another post, this user has XP SP3 according to the log file - read here...

Thank you all for the reply's.

Sorry about the YIKE's. Didn't know to post that. Just knew that the site was asking for feedback.

I was only asking why AutoPatcher for SP2 wasn't being offered. Maybe I am confused, here.

If I do a fresh install of WinXP that has SP2 slipstreamed, will Autopatcher apply the necessary patches to update the system up to SP3 or would it include SP3?

SP3 for XP x86 has been out for a long time and was a nice update to XP, and Microsoft has discontinued support for SP2 updates, and so follows AutoPatcher, meaning, SP3 is a prerequisite for a safe and reliable AutoPatching. There are a few (but few) updates left in the XP SP3 release that installs on a XP SP2 machine - Time to update. :)

No, and no - SP3 is a prerequisite, your OS needs to be XP w/ SP3. Also, you better get SP3 and update your install disc before Microsoft makes it hard to find, if it isn't already gone. Here is the last known good link for the full network (offline) installer of service pack 3 for XP x86 - SP3 for XP x86 - Network Installer.

so, nothing about "...reports 'WMP10_NONCRITICAL_PARENT'...". as this is the basis for signature, then if the release is official, then the same issue should happen in here and isn't the case. as an guess, an rogue file may be present, i'm unsure about it (just an idea: search for all .apm files, then delete them all. just after that, then run apup again. it will be an very small download that shall fix the issue at once. of course, an recursive md5 from the user folder can help a lot too). but it's an fact: i can't reproduce the issue in here, even loading that script under xp. if i can't reproduce, then i can't fix it, sorry
