I was using an XP Autopatcher I downloaded 1st August 2010 using apup v1.3.0.1.
I usually expand the Item categories and tick options selectively, but today, on 2 machines (XP Pro with SP3) I ticked ... Critical Updates, ... Recommended Updates and ... Updated Components at the root.
Both machines finished installing after about 80 minutes and I restarted them.
Both machines generated the same error after rendering the desktop - explorer.exe cannot locate iertutil.dll - it is damaged or missing . . .
This error state prevented explorer from working and even crippled the task manager - most internal commands rely on explorer.exe working.
The solution was to copy the missing file from the dll cache on one of the PC's (by using some dos commands in a cmd window accessed from Task Manager) and restarting the computer.
To try something different on the second PC, I copied the missing file onto a memory stick that had a bootable Ubuntu 9.4 on it and booted the machine with this. I copied the file into c:\windows\system32 where it belonged and restarted this PC.
With both PC's, a restart restored the desktop (explorer.exe worked again) and the second stage of IE8 installation (...installing IE8...) began.
I recalled seeing on each machine during Autopatcher install, when the IE8 routine started up it displayed ...uninstalling previous version of IE8...
Could this be the stage where the file iertutil.dll was deleted??
Once again, thanks for a great tool.
