Thanks for a wonderful tool.

I was using an XP Autopatcher I downloaded 1st August 2010 using apup v1.3.0.1.

I usually expand the Item categories and tick options selectively, but today, on 2 machines (XP Pro with SP3) I ticked ... Critical Updates, ... Recommended Updates and ... Updated Components at the root.

Both machines finished installing after about 80 minutes and I restarted them.

Both machines generated the same error after rendering the desktop - explorer.exe cannot locate iertutil.dll - it is damaged or missing . . .

This error state prevented explorer from working and even crippled the task manager - most internal commands rely on explorer.exe working.

The solution was to copy the missing file from the dll cache on one of the PC's (by using some dos commands in a cmd window accessed from Task Manager) and restarting the computer.

To try something different on the second PC, I copied the missing file onto a memory stick that had a bootable Ubuntu 9.4 on it and booted the machine with this. I copied the file into c:\windows\system32 where it belonged and restarted this PC.

With both PC's, a restart restored the desktop (explorer.exe worked again) and the second stage of IE8 installation (...installing IE8...) began.

I recalled seeing on each machine during Autopatcher install, when the IE8 routine started up it displayed ...uninstalling previous version of IE8...

Could this be the stage where the file iertutil.dll was deleted??

Once again, thanks for a great tool.

I'll give my take on this, if I'm understanding correctly, someone else (with more experience) can address the iertutil.dll issue.

If what you're saying in the "quote" is, you checked the single 'main' box at the root of each category, you in effect checked boxes for 2 purposes...

Any update or option that was not installed already - Black - will be installed.
Any update or option that was already installed - Blue - will be removed - see the message in AutoPatcher's main screen...

AutoPatcher said:

The following items are compatible with your computer. Those in blue are already installed. Please select the ones you want to install or remove.
Due to the gravity of your selections, installing and removing so many updates (and components) in one swoop you screwed the system up.

Note: I did what this user did, fired up AutoPatcher and selected the category box to select all updates, when I expanded the category all updates in blue were selected for removal BUT -> not one item was listed in AutoPatcher for removal meaning, AutoPatcher detected - selection: 73 to install, 0 to remove

If you look at the screenshot there are 12 visible items in blue that should be listed in removals since they are selected, but they are not. I didn't count every blue box so I don't know the exact number of installed updates on this particular system but at least 50 updates should be listed for removal.
