Assume I downloaded the newest patches (for 64bit Win7) and I want to apply them now (with autopachter.exe).
is it required that the official win update service is enabled and running?

yes and no. WU doesn't need to be enabled under xp or 2k, (despite be an good idea keep it enabled), but with vista and seven, ms did something that create an situation where certain updates can't be deployed if WU is disabled. as we can't predict that and autopatcher isn't an tool to replace WU, it's recommended that you keep that service enabled. the whole idea behind autopatcher is allow you fully update your OS before go online, but only that

Ok, thank you.
One more question: Is it required that windows update service is really "running" when applying patches or is setup to "manual" enough?
Other (similar) programs start (and stop) the service automatically if necessary.
Is Autopatcher so smart too?

i'm not sure about that, i only know that if the service is really disabled, some updates doesn't work. as for "smart", autopatcher doesn't disable any windows service or enable it
