I assume that the question can be written as "Which Microsoft patches could be considered spyware?"
If so, then the standard answer is "Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications" = kb905474. This arrives via WU or can be downloaded as WindowsXP-KB905474-ENU-x86-Standalone.exe.
Do NOT confuse "Windows Genuine Advantage" (=WGA) with "Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications" (=WGA Notifications).
Correct me if I'm wrong guys: AutoPatcher includes WGA but NOT WGA Notifications So the answer is: there is no need to avoid any patch that Autopatcher offers.

I've been thinking about adding KB905474 into the WGA catagory and of coarse to make it Optional and not Critical. Any thoughts?

Sure, you can add it to the WGA category.
It doesn't exactly halt system functions when not installed and neither a critical patch.

Just so long as the default is to leave it UNselected, otherwise I would say leave it out.
In my experience, corporate (VLK) installs of XP don't have this installed and, because direct access to WU is normally blocked, never have it installed. I would hate to mess up an otherwise perfectly good system because I forgot to UNcheck this item.

If it's not in the critical category then it won't be checked by default.

Exactly. If it's not in the critical catagory, the norm is not to have it checked by default. *There are some exceptions out there but this is the general rule*
I'll put this on my "to do list" for tomorrow =)

Well, current AP downloads directly from Microsoft, so you might not want to trust AP too.
No, really, what is it that you do with your computer that you're so afraid of being spied by Microsoft?
If you can't stand Microsoft then you should ditch Windows and start using Linux altogether.
Paranoid people these days...

When it comes to M$ and spying, using XP from day one M$ has been spying on you. There is a hidden partition that gets created with the install of XP that records site data and file habits etc that can be used against you if you are arrested and such. In fact there has been at least 1 patch that i know of (I don't remember which one exactly) that a former hacker friend of mine was forced to make for M$ as apart of his deal that actually increased the size of that partition to record more data. It came as a "Security Upgrade" or some trash that gets installed without telling you what all it does. If you are paranoid about M$ spying on you and such, get away from Windows completely. At least 2000 did not monitor this much about you as XP does. Just imagine Vista...

Firstly, the is no "trial vista". Either you have the full vista, or you're using a unauthorised copy.
Secondly, I think KB905474 should be included in the WGA section (it used to be, didn't it?) - but it's the only one that could be considered spyware AFAIK.
Thirdly, secret partition? Are you having a laugh mate?

> Correct me if I'm wrong guys: AutoPatcher includes WGA but NOT WGA Notifications
well, the current version of kb892130 (aka wga), includes booth, if i'm not mistaken. but AutoPatcher is not build to avoid ms actions to try stop piracy, so, if kb892130 and KB905474 aren't the same, AP has to include it, since is a choice from user install it or don't. by the way: booth are "critical update" (according to ms, so, don't blame me for that), even if currently you don't need KB905474 in order to run WU
> There is a hidden partition that gets created with the install of XP that records site data and file habits etc that can be used against you if you are arrested and such
:
and because of that a lot of people put some C4 inside the hd, just in case
but in fact, you can recover entire partitions from erased hd/floppy. i'm pretty sure that i saw this sort of thing in the first OS that i've already run in my life (that was an version of UNIX). there's another legend about this. some people say that you buy an 250Gb hd and discover that it has only 232GB or something. that has nothing to do with the SO. just someone forgot that should /8 and is doing it by /10. it is happening since a long time ago, but only from a few years from now some people notice that.
about trial versions of SO, some have trial versions, in deed. but legal trial versions us to have an time-valid serial or something. in vista, you don't need put an serial in 30 days, but format and install all again each 30 days don't make you run an legal version of Vista. if someone think otherwise, please try validate your SO and download something from MS.

@Cristiano - You are correct. WGA Notifications does include the standard WGA BUT Notifications includes an older version of Legitcheck.dll which is found in the system32 folder. Without the new version of this dll, you will be prompted by Microsoft Update to install WGA. I'm going to go ahead and include both WGA AND WGA Notifications. When Microsoft updates Notifications with the newest version of WGA, I can then remove WGA
Also if you slipstream SP3 to XP when it comes out, you will have the 30 day just like Vista... yea!.. I think...

erik, i had booth in my previews AP versions. but since i did an full format at my machine some time ago (and i had installed KB905474 by my version of AP), for this one, i don't have any link. but since this ones are multilanguage...
about sp3, please, don't scare me. i can't even think about the time that was taking in here, in beta versions of vista (that i still call of LongHorn by obvious reasons) to just copy files. at least, my pc is 100% linux compatible. the next version of windows, maybe. vista, don't. but i liked of that sidebar, so i have one (Thoosje Sidebar, not the pirated one). but an nice thing i can live with: SATA support for WXP install.
wow... wind is like hell in here. it's time to shutdown all before be too late...
[]s
edit: i already have KB905474 v1.7.0018.7. it's dated from 12/14/2007, but still legitcheckcontrol.dll is 1.7.18.7 and the version installed by kb892130 is 1.7.59.1
