I am using Windows Vista home basic. The last updates installed from the installation disks were from 7/31/07. I assume that means I have sp1. I have instructed Windows not to update.

I have retrieved the Autopatcher update 1.3.0.1 and Autopatcher engine 5.6.0.100.

When I ran Autopatcher, it appeared to run normally and indicated at the end, "Generating tree, no compatible items found." I have zero idea what that means.

My question(s):

When I run apup, I see an option to download what appears to be sp2 (says "don't mix with sp1" or something to that effect). I am currently downloading these files. I don't see a link in apup to download sp1 files. I know that I have updates needed, and I'm guessing that some sp1 updates are needed. Are the "don't mix with sp1" files what I need, or am I missing seeing something?

Thank you in advance.

not quite right. you can check that from control panel, system or at windows\autopatcher.log

> "Generating tree, no compatible items found." I have zero idea what that means.
this means that you don't have the prerequisites to run the script that you have downloaded

> I see an option to download what appears to be sp2 (says "don't mix with sp1" or something to that effect)
that is the sp2 script for vista. that warning is to those that still have the sp1 version of the script and wanna keep it. for those users, if they download the sp2 version of the script, they will loose the sp1 script

so please, be sure about the service pack that is deployed into your system. that "no compatible items found" may means that you don't have even sp1. if don't, you may require it before further updating

Don't know what service pack you have installed but you will want SP2 installed to effectively use the Vista SP2 package - you will need to download and install the service pack on your own, it is not a release, it is a requirement.

It means that when AutoPatcher was run, it determined there are no updates in the release that are compatable with your system. I bet you didn't download the Vista SP2 release, you only downloaded the 'Updater' and 'Engine' files.

There was a package for both SP1 and SP2 for Vista, the SP2 package would remove nearly all the updates from the SP1 package because they were part of the service pack - makes sense right :) It looks as if the SP1 package has been removed from the releases list so the note should be removed I suppose.

Bottom line here, you will want SP2 installed to use AutoPatcher for Vista SP2 but, I did look at many of the apm files and I don't see a restriction to SP2 only so I would figure that if you load the release many of the updates will be checked but - This Is Importatnt! ...They may not install if they are for a SP2 system. I don't know I don't have Vista.

You can experiment with a few updates at a time and see if they get installed or wait until someone posts with a definitive answer.

Note: Someone is posting while I'm typing so I hope my response doesn't conflict, I'll post anyway. :)

Thanks to all. I am beginning to understand.

Well, I just spent 5 minutes with windows help trying in vain to ascertain what service pack I have. It should be dead bang easy, but MS managed to make it difficult as usual. How do I find out for sure what service pack I have? Please bear in mind I am not a technical person.

Thank you.

No problem - let's see if we can figure this out.

If you ran AutoPatcher already it created a log file, 'autopatcher.log', locate this file (should be in the root \Windows - use 'Search') and open it it with notepad. It will show what service pack you have installed. Also, in 'Control Panel', I believe listed under 'System', there should be a tab (I believe Properties) that will also list what service pack is installed.

I am just now downloading the users guide to apup. I apologize, I did not see it before.

"I bet you didn't download the Vista SP2 release, you only downloaded the 'Updater' and 'Engine' files."

You would likely win the bet.

I downloaded "AutoPatcher Updater v1.3.0." only. What else do I need to download?

Thanks.

Regarding the service pack this link will be more helpful - http://pcsupport.abo...rvpackvista.htm

Follow These Instructions! - the only thing you will do differently is instead of selecting Windows XP SP3 you will select Vista SP2 which likely will already be selected for you. Don't worry about the other two items being selected, anything already downloaded will be ignored - meaning go ahead and leave 'Updater' and 'Engine' checked.
