I noticed this most recent update there are like a total of 4 WGA validation updates to the regular updates for both x86 and x64 O/S. Here they are listed so the editors can update them. I did edit them to be brief but still have the links. The links show for x64 my system but there are x86 versions as well since I have both O/S on laptop and desktop.

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2454826)

Download size: 9.7 MB

More information:
http://support.micro....com/kb/2454826

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB976902)

Download size: 10.2 MB

More information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976902

I do notice for KB976902 they are cab files will the authors be able to somehow get these files to install rather then downloading the cab files? I would like that better then to use windows update just incase problems results and I have to reimage back and try again.

in fact, kb976902-x64 is just an msu file like any other. this link was taken from automatic updates log from my 7 x64. i don't know about x86, but probably will be the same

But if I check the download link the file is a *.cab file when you go to individually download the file for KB976902?? It does give instruction where it says you can save it to install later but doesn't give instructions on how to install the cab files??

the file is a *.cab file
.cab, which is just another archive type, similar to a .zip file, is a Microsoft branded archive - Info!

Using Winrar (maybe Winzip etc) you can highlight a file and view the contents. If you double-click a .cab in Windows it will likely start extracting and installing so don't do that unless you want to. I would think 'extract.exe' has a parameter to extract to a specific location so you can see the contents without running an installer, no doubt Windows Installer should as well.

besides mike tip, if you have looked into the link that i've posted, it is an .msu file. that link was taken from the file Windows\WindowsUpdate.log and probably will be there if you have enabled automatic updates. that file can be opened with notepad. just do an quick search for the kb number and you will find it

I will check on that double click to see if installs and but I am fairly sure on my updates when I went to the side for that file it only showed as a *.cab download no *.msu download??

if you browse to ms download center, then you will get the .cab version, but if you have automatic updates, then you can see the link for the .msu file. to make clear, this is what i have in WindowsUpdate.log for that particular date:
Spoiler

as you can see, there's more than one way to grab the download link for something

easy, that file is located at windows\WindowsUpdate.log and contains every single action that windows update did. it may look as a mess, but search is your friend :)

After looking at Cristiano's post (#7) I would bet you need Automatic Updates enabled and likely will need to use it to update your system to create a log file. If I'm not mistaken the log file, WindowsUpdate.log, should be in C:\Windows - if not do a search for it.

Locate the service using Search or Control Panel, look for Windows Update. You should be able to adjust the Settings here.

Haha, and again I type too slow - sorry :)

I've been noticing very strange user names lately and wondered if they were spam bots???

Until a week ago, when I had actually responded to a spam bot on another forum (I knew it was spam but thought it was a real person, it apparently wasn't - I called the bot a DumbA$$ Spammer). I didn't know they are so sophisticated now they can register as well post - scary

Did the windows update and did find the link and downloaded the file. I then reimaged the HDD and then installed the cab update and saved the new image and now it works. What a hassle to just get the updates. I used to download reimage and then updated and reimage the HDD. Just so the windows update isn't turn on til I want it on and doing it that way gives me reassurance I choose when to update not when windows wants me to. That is how I do it.
