Thanks for the reply, when I reformatt I use a version of XP home that has Sp1, Sp2 and Sp3 silpstreamed into it. I just started having this problem last month before that it worked fine would it help if I deleated July 2012 updates from my copy of Autopatchjer? what would I delete besides the update? I keep a list of all the downloads and the mounth and year downloaded. The some 200+ downloads I'm getting from Microsoft are killing me on time. If it is a size issue in the downloads and it just started with the July downloads I assume that is the problem.

There is no real issue. The issue is in the script. You have correct files downloaded... its just the script thinks the files are wrong because the file size has changed for this month but, we have not changed the script to reflect this yet. You can run autpatcher.exe and you have most of the files just fine(except this months updates).

<snip> I us XP, Vista and Win7. But within the last month my XP version shows an error (a problem with autopatcher main module) and won't load after I have downloaded over 300 Mgs. of updates from Microsoft then it will load and run. Whats the Fix! do I need a certian download from MS to correct the problem? Also wheres the link for updated Autopatcher I've tried several times to update my current version is updater 1.3.0.1 and engine 5.6.0.100 .

Thanks for your help

Rustygun

So APUP (apup.exe) will run but AutoPatcher (autopatcher.exe) wont? Have you tried running as admin (right-click autopatcher.exe)? Check all your security software, make sure nothing is blocking the program from running, including 'DEP' in the OS. You may have set DEP up but a Microsoft update may have reset security to default settings - don't let any AV, firewall, spyware, or malware program block either 'apup.exe' or 'autopatcher.exe' from running.

You may try again running APUP, select only 2 scripts to download, 'AutoPatcher Updater' (APUP) & 'AutoPatcher Engine' (AutoPatcher Program), make sure you get a complete download, this should eliminate missing files to start the program.

Now, I don't want to offend but if you look at the 2 terms I highlighted above, you make a very confusing statement, can you elaborate on what you mean here? It reads as if you're saying - "last month you got an error, AutoPatcher wont load, a main module issue but, ... after 300 MBs of updates it will load and run...!" What does this mean? The lack of periods (.) and commas (,) make this statement very hard to interpret.

Running the latest script shouldn't cause any problems, something is interferring with AutoPatcher, a screenshot of the error might help.

I.m sorry I failed english in school (that was 50 years ago english didn't seem that impotant then and in my day boys didn'y take typing so I'm not very good on a keyboard either.) I meant autopatcher won't run and autopatcher Exe. won't run either. The 200+ updates are downloaded using windows update it requires 3 runs of windows update to get them after the 3rd run when it shows no updates available then autopatcher will run and I still use it to get optional windows updates as well as adobe and java.

Worldman, I got 2 PC's today that just needed cleanup and updating so I didn't reformat and autopatcher ran ok. So my problem happens when I reformat and reinstall XP. I'm using the same install disks I have always used (XP home with service packs slipstreamed in) I have several backup copys and have tried different disks in case of a bad disk but I get no errors from XP installaton I'm lost I've made a second copy of autopatcher in case my copy was corrupt however I had to use my copy of apup, I wanted to download a fresh copy of apup and start totally from scratch but couldn't find a link to dosnload.

The download is under the main forum as Autopatcher Download. It shouldn't be that hard to find. From reading your first post in here your programs should be up to date.

Now for your main problem. AP/Apup should have no problem starting at all regardless of the updates your computer already has. They were written in VB6 so the code is completely native to windows and all things it would require are already part of windows. If it has a problem... the only thing I can remotely think of is an Anti-Virus, firewall, the path has Unicode characters in it(AP and apup are not Unicode friendly), or improper admin rights issue. There is also the possibility that the slip streamed CD's are not proper but, we can probably rule that out.

When I reformat and install XP I run Autopatcher from a flash drive before I install any protection ( I've programed a new flash drive to rile that out) apup loads fine and downloaded the needed updates with out a problem but when I try to run autopatcher thats when I get the error message. I wil download a fresh copy of apup and try again. If you come up with anything please let me know and thanks again. Up until 2 years ago all I could get in the Kentucky backwoods was dial-up it would have been impossiable to do what I do without Autopatcher.

P.S. I get a sever error message when I click the download button

Copy the files over to the hard drive and then try autopatcher.

I understand completely, no need to apologize :)

It is really hard at times knowing ewxactly what the user on the other end is doing, and if the post lacks specifics it can take a long time getting to the root of the problem.

Ditto ViroMan's suggestion.

A good rule of thumb is to always copy or move the AutoPatcher release package, the \apup folder, to a local drive when either updating the release or updating the system itself.

If you were updating a system and you have a copy on the thumb drive then simply delete the folder (on the system) when the machine is fully updated.

If you were updating the release, you can make use of a backup practice on the thumb drive, naming older versions (folders) accordingly, then move the latest package back to the thumb drive once updated. This is one way a friend of mine does it,

\AP_June_2012
\AP_July_2012
\apup

The first 2 examples are \apup folders 'renamed' with their Patch Tuesday months used, and the \apup folder is the most recent or most up-to-date. There are many ways to maintain backups, it's good to have at least a one month Patch Tuesday backup.

The backup should be as close to the most recent Patch Tuesday as possible, a very old release may cause problems with those systems that also update via MU/WU.

Thanks, I down load updates to my personal computer. I have 4 folders one for XP, Vista, Win7 x86 and one for Win7 x64. While I prefer XP and build my own computers many of my friends have store bought with the current O/S. XP then is copied to a Flash drive for use on other computers. The newer PC's I update over my network after I have installed anti-virus program and scanned ( I only have a few with Vista when it came most of my friends downgraded to XP) But I haven't had any problems running AP on the other systems. I have tried coping AP to the local hard drive and even trird Installing it fresh on the PC. I put a new mother board in my own PC last month and that is about the same time I started having problems. Mh hard drive is patitioned and all my AP files are on D drive so they wern't bothered I just formatted C for the new board. Two exceptions to the problem when I did an older Compaq I used the system restore file an AP ran witout problem also I dug out an old MSI 6340 and set it up to see what AP would do and it worked. So the puzzle continues like i said earler after 3 runs of Wundows update (when is says no new updates available) then AP will run on all of them.

Strange indeed. Do you have a picture of the actual error? Please take a screen shot and post.

bmp files..eww... convert them to jpg files. Fastest way is open them up in paint brush and then save as jpg. then zip the files up and attach them. You can attach files here by clicking on more reply options button in the lower right of the chat box. and then choose files... in the lower right when the window reloads.

There are a few scripts that need updating(so that they recognize the changed files) but, they still download the proper updates. I have VB6 now so I will get around to editing that into a silent warning somehow instead of a "Stop the press!! something is wrong" warning.
