I thought I'd pass along the fact that I finally ran across a Web Folder (See Bug reports > Here's my list).

After all the messages back and forth concerning my previously mentioned bug report I paid a bit more attention to what I was on my system.

I finally noticed an oddity when I had Explorer open. My Network Places included a folder: A on Updates.EncartaUpdate.msn.com with subfolder \A and in this subfolder were all the downloaded Encarta updates and these files could be and were copied to a folder I created on my system.

So, now I know that at least one progam I have, Encarta, does and will create a Web Folder for its own purposes.

Because the updates to Encarta 2007 ended the end of October and I do have a copy of the downloaded updates on my system I am going to delete this Web Folder. After the folder was deleted I re-ran AutoPatcher and again opted to install KB907306 to see if the removal of the Web Folder made a difference - it did not.

Anyway, the problem with KB907306 is still there but at least I now know programs can and will create Web Folders without any intervention by or approval of the user.

To me, something that should not be allowed without the users knowledge or permission. Sneaky Microsoft at it again.

I have Encarta Reference library 2007 (UK edition) on my XP SP2 PC. It puts its updates (.eit files) in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Encarta Reference Library\2007\Z\Updates

There is no web folder in My network places.

Also, just now checking for updates in it, it gave me updates well beyond October, in fact up to and including January 2008.

Maybe it depends on which version of Encarta you have?

Can't verify that.

Also, I have since upgraded to Encarta Premium 2008 and I no longer have the web folder I mentioned earlier; upgrades get installed as you mentioned.

Maybe it was just some kind of fluke; who knows anymore?
