As far as disabling the already installed updates not such good idea as there may be an update that a user wants to uninstall for whatever reason...
Will see what any of the others have to say regarding the idea.

Bold is for root items (color depends, see below)
Black is for official items which are not installed (or some child item is not installed)
Blue is for official items which are already installed
Green is for official items with all child items installed (blue or green)
Red is for unofficial items (whether they are installed or not). A suffix is also added.
Orange is for unofficial items which are installed. A suffix is also added.
Have no idea as to how applicable it is for todays stuff.

Pairs of colors, distinct and different might work, or a choice of preselcted colors, say 10 unique colors for 'Installed' and a different 10 for 'Uninstalled'. Icons would also work, then the user could change the colors all they want.
