Confused about using APUP.

Ok so I haven't used AP for a while since the "slap on the wrist". Came to have a look today and I'm confused how to use APUP. I've read posts saying to run it in an empty folder. And other people saying they updated the August core with it or some such thing. Could someone please steer me in the right direction about how to use this? I don't see how it is just an update since I'm downloading the XP stuff and it's around 300MB. Do I need the old releases or is this a new complete release?

Create a folder \Autopatcher.
Unzip APUP.ZIP into said folder.
Run APUP.EXE; you will see a window listing possible downloads, check what's appropriate; click Next.
Wait - download could take a while - hope you have high-speed connection.
Run AUTOPATCHER.EXE when download is complete. Make selections.
You have NO NEED for any of the previous AutoPatcher files/downloads/etc.

To clarify, this is a completly stand-alone release, and it can even get messed up if you try to run it on top of an old release.

--> Yes, it is best to start fresh with an empty folder. Extract the contents of the latest apup.zip to this folder.

It's OK guys, got it worked out. And downloading one thing at a time helped with the freezes and errors.
But what do you mean by running "on top" of an old release? Do you mean by updating from the old release first then running this version (from a different folder) can mess up the OS?

Forget you even heard the term 'old release' - it is not pertinent anymore.

"Old Release" refers to autopatcher before APUP, where you download a HUGE program straight from this site that had all of the updates in it. That got shut down by MS because the updates did not come from their servers. Now they do, and now you even get to pick which things you want the updates for!
