As a newbie, I have a couple more 'dumb' questions. To begin be advised my virgin installation, just yesterday, was my original 2002 SP1 version of XP Pro. After installing it (reformat process), I then installed SP2 from my disk sent to me by MS. Then, before doing anything, I activated the Update process (to generate a list) by MS, and printed out the indicated critical updates response ... some 95 files. Then I installed APUP and let it do it's thing regarding the various modules ... including critical updates.

I'm of the impression that when you download the modules, the files downloaded are 'all' the critical updates for XP ... as detected by a 'search' or detection process concerning my specific computer. If this is the case, then here's my dumb question....

In comparing the Update files process, from MS, I come up with quite a few that are not in the list from APUP. Nevertheless, with this initial process, I made a note of those ... and then let APUP install the ones from the MS list that were in the APUP list. All the others that had been checked automatically, I unchecked.

At this point, I 'assumed' that with the next detection process from MS update, things might straighten out a bit.

Nope! The same ones that were not in the original APUP listing, are still needed as determined by MS update.

So ... why does not APUP, with it's initial 'detection' process ... or master downloaded files, reflect all the updates from day one?

In closing, let me qualify my dumb question by stating that I am not doubting APUP at all. In fact, I am one that really appreciates all the effort that has been put forth to keep it going. It's just that I am one confused ... newbie.

Just kidding of coarse =)

Now you state that you are using APUP to install updates? Basically APUP only downloads the updates from Microsoft and the modules from us. You should be running AutoPatcher.exe in order to install these updates.

Was this a mistake and you meant that you were using AutoPatcher.exe to install the updates? If this is the case, what are you showing as missing?

apup.exe will download all updates, regardless of what's installed.

AutoPatcher.exe will only let you install what's appropriate for your system.

Also: Sometimes there are specific drivers, or hotfixes that are useful only on certain configurations. Perhaps these are the ones that need to be installed?

As the 'newbie', APUP-Autopatcher are the same to me. Sorry about the confusion; yes, I used Autopatcher.

The ones that were 'detected' by my activation of Windows Update ... that I did not see in the APUP downloads for Critical Updates, both for the initial and also for the second Windows detection process, are ...

This is from my list. If one or two are there, and that is likely due to my being interrrupted once the other nite, sorry; but there are others. With these being detected twice by Windows, on the second detection, I went ahead and had it do the update. After all, APUP ... and autopatcher ... had already done me a big service with the other many many ones being there.
