Therefore, we want to have the pre-SP3 Autopatcher back, please!
A non-SP3 version that is updated every month.

All those comments about SP3 may be true but I installed it on both my Pro and Home systems and have had NO problems; further, a friend has installed SP3 on both of his Pro systems - no problems.

If 98% of the people installing SP3 do not experience problems then there is no possible reason to continue with SP2 - it's now obsolete.

I agree...I have loaded it on at least 6 systems with NO issues. Don't move back in time, address your SP3 issues and move on!

I would bet that a large number of the machines that have had problems with SP3 were on the brink of requiring a re-install.

How many times have you installed a new piece of software and blamed it for screwing up an installation only to find that it will run flawlessly on a fresh OS installation. How XP continues to run on some peoples PCs baffles me, XP of any flavor is far more resilient than people give it credit.

Forget SP2 its history.

Just slipstream a sp3 into your old cd and do a reinstall
autostreamer is what I use for it.

Every service pack is just a perfect excuse for a reinstall: cleaner, faster and no stupid pop-ups for at least a day (until you connect to the net again and whop there they are again :-) )

I agree with the original poster. I wish to avoid SP3 for now.

I equate the synchronized deep level code in a service pack
with a chance for MS to slip more Vista like code into XP and
will avoid SP3 until it is proven by the community to be relatively
free from these abuses. As for everyone that has posted
"I installed SP3 with no problem" I reply that these are not
issues you are going to notice on the day that you install SP3.

I wish I had kept my AP directory more up to date so I had
a more recent AP-SP2 as a final set of SP2 updates.

What "Vista like code" is it that you are concerned about? I think the point is, regardless of what the "community" says, SP3 is here. If you want to be current, you'll use it...otherwise you'll stay in the past.

I still think that the valuable Autopatcher group (and thanks a lot indeed for your work!) WOULD DO US A VERY GREAT SERVICE, if they would in the download list for Autopatcher also include: "Windows XP non-SP3"! What do you have to loose?

It should not only include updates up to the release date of SP3, but also individual updates issued after that.

MAKE YOUR GREAT WORK STILL GREATER THROUGH INCLUDING THIS OPTION!!!

I would like to agree that it would be a great option to have Autopatcher XP for SP2 around for a while longer. Many of the clients I support have not had SP3 certified with their apps yet.

If supporting it is too time consuming then pls just having the last update of SP2 available for download for a few months I think that would satisfy most people in the interim.

It shouldn't be too onerous to support both.

Microsoft ceases all support for XP SP2 on July 13th, 2010.

So it's a bit premature to end AP support for it.

As I said in another posting - if 99% of users are not having problems then SP3 is the standard and earlier service packs are now obsolete. Those having problems should solve them and they should stop blaming the software.

Hey guys. This is what I'm going to do and why I'm going to do this.

I do agree that there should have been some prior warning about AP deleting SP2 superseded updates. For this reason, I'll go ahead and work on and bring back the SP2 for XP pack for AutoPatcher temporarily. On June 1st though, I'm going to remove it.

Please understand everybody, I have job just like you do. (hopefully <wink>) I already am managing thirteen AP lists which I'll probably be splitting up the Vista pack later for future server 2008 support. Maintaining two lists for the same updates is going to make troubleshooting and updating that much more difficult. If you disagree, then I'm sorry. I already put my time and a good portion of my personal life aside in order to constantly update and release these updates for AutoPatcher each month.

I'll shoot a post on the front page once it's up.

I am a newbie user of autopatcher, so if I am asking silly questions, please excuse my lack of knowledge.....

The announcement on autopatcher.com regarding the return of SP2 for XP pack says:

Is this because if I download the SP2 and SP3 releases, the SP3 release will remove any superseded updates downloaded for the SP2 release?

If so, then this brings me on to my next question.....

I would like to start using SP3, but I still have a lot of SP2 machines out there. If I download the SP3 release and then run autopatcher on an SP2 machine (eg: with the /qmup option) will it do anything (eg: remove anything)......or do nothing to the machine?

yes

no. the only one thing that will happend is that the sp3 version has a lot of modules missing that are needed into an windows xp sp2. basically, AP will not load the sp3 only modules in an SP2 version of windows xp, but just that.

So as a follow on question, if I do the following:

* Build a machine with XP + SP2 but with NO post-SP2 updates
* Run APUP and download SP3 release
* Run autopatcher on my XP-SP2 machine

....will autopatcher install less updates on my XP-SP2 machine than if I:

* Build a machine with XP + SP2 but with NO post-SP2 updates
* Run APUP and download only SP2 release
* Run autopatcher on my XP-SP2 machine

???

Hi cacheman, if I could give you my opinion.

To assure no headaches and an updated PC....

Use (AutoPatcher for Windows XP SP2) on a (Windows XP SP2 machine)

and...Use (AutoPatcher for Windows XP SP3) on a (Windows XP SP3 machine)

If you haven't all ready done it, I would get both versions of AutoPatcher. Just
pay close attention to the machine you download with, the installed OS will be checked
in the Apup window by default. So, if you are using a machine with XP SP3 but want
XP SP2 look closely at the Apup window and un-check what you don't want.

Note: Create 2 seperate folders, one for each version of Windows XP and extract the contents of
the apup.zip to each folder.

It should look like this for SP2.. C:\Apup Windows XP SP2 -> I'm assuming your using XP in English,
if not pick your OS language...."run "apup.exe" and when the selection window pops up...

(check) -> Autopatcher_Updater
(check) -> Autopatcher_Engine
(check) -> AutoPatcher for Windows XP SP2 (x86)

and to have an even more robust Autopatcher I would add these Options, but not required...

(check) -> DirectX Addon Pack
(check) -> DotNet Addon Pack
(check) -> Extras Addon Pack

and click "next" .....

Only difference for XP SP3 is the folder name C:\Apup Windows XP SP3

and...Check AutoPatcher for Windows XP SP3 (x86) and un-check (XP SP2 x86)

Just my opinion....
