I have SP3 installed and run Autoupdater (version 1.04).

While the patches are downloaded I get this verification error.

See:
Autopatcher 1.04 Verification Error

I deleted all of Autoupdater and ran it again; same problem.
Why does this happen? Is there a fix.

When I click on "Yes" in the "Invalid downloads" window, I get
other "uz" error messages. So best I can do here is click on "No"
and then everything stops....

Thanks for help and advice!

Rob.

there's no need to delete everything. apup has an built in check. if anything doesn't math, just that thing that doesn't math will be downloaded again when you run apup again

but helps a lot if you run apup like this: apup /log

then, upload that log file to some place and please point the location for that. with that, we may check if this is an issue regarding your download or an changed md5 for some file

Go ahead and run APUP to update your release again. I've verified that there are no MD5 errors plus there aren't any new updates.

After "apup.exe /log" I get a text file called "apup". At the end of that file I have these errors:

=========================================================
[...]
Item rootsupd.exe doesn't appear to be here. Adding its downloads to queue...
Adding http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/rootsupd.exe.
Finished adding downloads. Process queue.

[...etc. etc. zip-zip...]

Download queue status: 1 files waiting.
apengine_exe.zip: DISCONNECTED!!!

=========================================================

Any idea what this "DISCONNECTED!!!" means.

This Windows PC is in a home network, that is connected to the
cable via a router. Is it disconnected because a particular port is
not available for throughput?

Thanks,
Rob.

currently, apup doesn't work well with proxy. direct connections works fine, but routed only, not always. try run apup without that router, just to be sure

It's has practical difficulties to connect that PC directly to the internet. However, I've bypassed momentarily this apup connection
problem by running the apup.exe on another Windows PC (on another network) and then copy the whole apup directory tree.
Then I run the patcher and all went fine.

However, could you tell me which ports are used by apup.exe when it is downloading & verifying the files?
I can adjust the router and open a few more ports, if I knew which ones are used.

Thanks.

Rob.

Strange! Why such a mistery about the ports in use by apup?

I have most of my Windows PCs behind firewalled routers, which protects them better against malicious attacks.
It's then rather annoying that the information about required ports to make apup work is not provided....

Regards,
Rob.

I can't say for sure but I don't believe the updater uses any special ports for downloading other than 80 and 21. It all depends on the source.

I'll ask Antonis and get back to ya later. I don't believe this is privileged information but I could be wrong.

One more thing:

I've started this thread, because I got this verification error; I then was told that the reason "might" be that apup does not
work well via router or with proxy.

Maybe it would be a good idea to make apup more verbose and informative when it encounters this type of problems.
We then have to do less guess work as to why there is a problem.

Just an idea.

Fellas,

I did find two files that failed verification. They are rootsupd.exe in the 32-bit sp2 package and windowsmedia11-kb946665-x86-intl.exe in the sp3 package. The rootsupd file showed 103% 295.1 instead of 286.1 kiB. My apup /log turned up the following:

Starting detection routine for item rootsupd.exe
Looking for file C:\Autopatcher\modules\Critical\RootCert_files\rootsupd.exe
MD5 Hashes do NOT match. Expecting 020EF20DD655F8992A64FBFC6F59FF90, but found b0ef15fe19fb3ac9367b1fcfe6d473f3!!!
Item rootsupd.exe doesn't appear to be here. Adding its downloads to queue...
Adding http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/rootsupd.exe.

The wmp11 update did not show any size discrepancy but did show a verification error. My apup /log showed the following:

Starting detection routine for item windowsmedia11-kb946665-x86-intl.exe
Looking for file C:\Autopatcher\modules\NonCritical\KB946665_xp_wmp11_x86.apm_files\windowsmedia11-kb946665-x86-intl.exe
MD5 Hashes do NOT match. Expecting F79916E33BF08A710224FC05B53A890B, but found 819dad813355442ee4aa4aec9f682701!!!
Item windowsmedia11-kb946665-x86-intl.exe doesn't appear to be here. Adding its downloads to queue...
Adding http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/6...65-x86-intl.exe.

I ran apup 3 times with the same files showing the problem.

Not sure if thats the issue but I just ran into the same type of problem. Another thing I just noticed, when I brought up my computer and properties, it shows I am still using windows xp pro sp2.

Hope this helps!!

I keep getting this message "Failed verification, continue at your own risk?"

I've tried downloading over about 6 times, it always gives me this error around 90 to 94%.

Re-run apup again with the /log option (as in C:>apup /log) and post the apup.log file here.

apup.log may be too big to post. See the advice in THIS POST (in THIS TOPIC).

I just had a long, detailed post disappear on me when I tried to post it so I'm cutting this down.

I always get verification error on the last file in the download list when I run apup.exe 1.04. I confirm this from the log. Unfortunately I nearly always get a runtime '0' error message too - I don't know if the two are connected. The last logged run gave no runtime error and I could find no reference to the verification error in the log. Without a runtime '0' error, selecting to continue at own risk appears to run the download and shellexecute processes to completion, otherwise apup.exe terminates early.

I am downloading post SP3 updates, directX, dotnet, extra addons, and office modules. I suspect it is always the last file in the download list that gives the verification error as from memory the verification failure filename can differ if I change the modules downloaded.

I have a 2Mbps cable connection and am not running any other programs while using autopatcher. I use IE7 and have no proxy set up in IE7. I do not usually have disconnects or broken downloads unless I max out my connection with a lot of concurrent downloads. My internet PC is connected directly to the cable modem (i.e. no router). The internet PC has XP Pro + SP3 and all critical and optional updates already installed via Windows Update, and WGA is installed. I am trying to make an autopatcher DVD to assist in setting up a newly built XP Pro with SP3 PC.

I have run apup.exe 1.04 four times into clean directories and each run has given me both a runtime '0' and a verification error except for the last logged run which gave the verification error only. As each run takes about 2 hours I have not sat watching the screen, so I cannot say if the two errors are generated at the same time - the last log is not helpful. I will make one last logged attempt and then give up for the moment until this problem can be identified and fixed. (I note the runtime '0' error is also happening in the 2003 runs).

I hope this info helps someone.

Hi calico
It's a pity your detailed post was lost, because it is difficult to diagnose errors without detailed information, or a log file.

First, let me state, for everyone's benefit, because there is some bad information in this thread.
APUP works perfectly well behind a firewall and through a NAT router.
I run APUP through a NAT router behind an SPI firewall and it works -- every time.

If you see repeated "DISCONNECTED!!!" messages in the log file, these are not the only reasons. (Nor, in fact, even the usual reasons.)

When you say:

Quote

I have run apup.exe 1.04 four times into clean directories
This is not the best thing to do. Use the same directory again. APUP will not download again all files that are OK.

At the moment there seems to be widespread confusion on this forum about Verification Errors. Here's some general advice I posted earlier today:

View PostJames, on Aug 4 2008, 09:42 AM, said:

This advice is general, as other people will be reading this thread:

1) If you have just run APUP with the /log option, save the log file under a different name. Otherwise the next run will erase the existing information.

2) Re-run APUP again in the same folder. If it reports errors, post the log file that shows the errors.
Or, you could ignore this Step (temporarily) and go to Step 3.

3) Try running AutoPatcher (autopatcher.exe). All downloads and all modules will be verified before AutoPatcher allows you to install anything. If all is well, AutoPatcher will show "Official Release" at the top right-hand corner (white letters on a blue background)

4a) If AutoPatcher does not, go back and carry out Step 2.

4b) If AutoPatcher does not, and you have run APUP with no errors, try running AutoPatcher with the /log /verbose options. Post the log file, which is in the Windows SYSTEM32 folder.

Hi James,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Thank you very much for your helpful post. I will run things in the order and way suggested - but given the proximity to August 2008's Patch Tuesday I think I will wait a few days.

Being a noobie in apup use please forgive my ignorance - I assume that after a patch Tuesday the various download selections that apup downloads for the various OS have to be updated and that apup references the appropriate updated list for the given user/OS against what is already present in the user's download folder. If it doesn't work something like that requiring human intervention of some sort then that would really be some powerful magic!

I would like to know how I could tell such an autopatcher update is available? Is there an Autopatcher "patch Tuesday" equivalent, or do I need to check the homepage for an announcement? Or is/could it be possible to schedule apup to run overnight with a flag which would simply return a message to a log file or create a flag file to indicate that an update was available to download?

I'm going to delve around the forum to find out more about how apup works, but if anyone could point me to the right thread I'd be grateful. Thanks.

And thanks to all the Autopatcher team again for their work on this project.

If you are already having file verification errors, it may not make any difference whether you wait until after Patch Tuesday or not. It depends upon the cause.

Remember also that Patch Tuesday only applies to security updates. Other fixes may come on any day of the month.

As for your question:

The way to check if AutoPatcher's list of updates has changed is to look in the appropriate "Hotfix Depot" thread. Since you are posting in the AutoPatcher for Windows XP SP3 (32-bit) section that would be: AutoPatcher XP x86 Hotfix Depot

Look at the bottom of the first post, where you will find:

Quote

Latest Changes:

08.09.08
- Re-Added MSXML Updates

08.05.08
- Added KB955417
Please note this quote is only current now, at the time I'm posting -- it WILL change! Dates are in USA (mm.dd.yy) format.

APUP does not have a flag to notify you (like the WU/AU "Notify me but don't automatically download...." option). But you can always run APUP, then later look at the log file, which contains a downloaded file list.

Thank you for your informative answers, James.

I had mistakenly assumed that the new autopatcher system would be monthly update based - possibly because I have been looking at the RyanVM site as well. Now that I have discovered Autostreamer I may not need RyanVM!

I also assumed Autopatcher would only deal with security updates. Is it right to assume Autopatcher will not attempt to download any Microsoft files or updates that require WGA verification? I have WGA installed but I can't visualise how apup.exe could automatically provide the required verification for the WGA-installed PC it is running on to the Microsoft website. Direct downloading these updates is quite klugey compared to "open" non-WGA-requiring security updates. Maybe my assumption is wrong, and you guys are much cleverer than I realised ? :-)

If Autopatcher doesn't/can't download WGA-requiring files, even perhaps by design, it would be nice if it could inform you of any such downloads that are relevent to your Operating System flavour - although I can't immediately think of anything vital in the past.

Please note I am in no way looking for any workaround to installing WGA. I have it installed and I'm not looking to break it. I am merely trying to understand the limits of what Autopatcher is designed to do. I hasten to add I am gradually reading threads on the forum and I hope I won't be such an obvious noobie in a while.

I have noticed that in apup.exe if you select to download IE7 you cannot deselect the WGA checkbox anyway as the checkmark always pops back!

I appreciate I have wandered off-topic so I won't post to this thread again until I have some on-topic info.

Thanks again.
