Are Patches by Microsoft Servers still Verified?

Hi. I've been an avid user of AutoPatcher for many years, and very active on the old forums. Very sad when the project closed up.

Now that AutoPatcher has been re-incarnated after a Microsoft cease and desist, I feel a bit leery about its use. To be honest, I was much more comfortable downloading patches from Mirrored sites, because I knew at least one independent researcher had reviewed and approved of the patch before its inclusion into AutoPatcher. Now that the updates are scraped from Microsoft Servers, I feel uneasy at the thought that Microsoft might remove or modify existing patches in order to push support for Vista or force Genuine Advantage and other Longhorn crap down our throats.

My questions:

Is there any safety net in the new AutoPatcher that would verify the contents of a patch once downloaded as "Approved by AutoPatcher" against a known hash list?

Is there any effort to provide mirrored downloads in the event that Microsoft starts pulling useful patches, such to detour the use of AutoPatcher or Windows 2K, XP, et al.

I am afraid to touch the AutoPatcher unless I know these things to be true, and would just stick with my old copy from 2007.

To be honest, I'm rather startled to see AutoPatcher brought back, still an independent project. It creeps me out that Microsoft didn't throw some money at Antonis and just buy-and-sink AutoPatcher. Or did they? Is there any Microsoft involvement today? Why did you suddenly switch websites and hosting for something more expensive? Am I being paranoid?
