Microsoft Windows - Recommended Updates - Update for Windows XP - KB951978
I can not install this through AutoPatcher, but when I try to install directly I got message - The version of Internet Explorer you have installed does not match the update you are trying to install.
I have WinXP SP3 with IE7.

Hi startrek...
I've seen a few mentions of this issue in the Microsoft TechNet forums. I would
be curious if using Microsoft directly and going thru the validation process gets
this hotfix installed...
Try this link for Microsoft directly - validation for this hotfix is required.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en
Hope this works for you.

The reason kb951978 will not install is because Microsoft blocks installation if Internet Explorer 7 (or IE8 Beta) is present.
The installation "rules" (set internally in the package) seem to require:
XP Service Pack 3
Windows Script 5.7
Internet Explorer 6
at which point cscript.exe/wscript.exe/jscript.dll/vbscript.dll version 5.7.0.18066 are all installed

Microsoft revised the kb951978 update last week to remove the install block if Internet Explorer 7 is installed. Regretably they did not change the update filename, by making it "v2".
[rant]
So, once again, we have to deal with a MSFT update with changed contents, changed date, changed digital signature, different MD5 hash...... but the same filename.
[/rant]
Here's the MD5 hash details for download:
0ccd4746432f7310aa1c081334ff3f1c "old" WindowsXP-KB951978-x86-ENU.exe
b448003c41feb10ddb66810448c85c12 "new" WindowsXP-KB951978-x86-ENU.exe
And for detection:
062cb542af01ee1f0d791cf66f57b00b "old" KB951978.CAT
be537d1ada5b27aba1a704cc3bde6745 "new" KB951978.CAT
Please note: this MSFT update will still not install properly if you have kb933812 (QFE branch) or kb933873 installed. These are MSFT PSS (i.e. non-public) hotfixes that will not affect AutoPatcher users.
If you have built your own slipstreamed XP CD that incorporates kb933812 (QFE branch) or kb933873 don't complain here - complain on the appropriate slipstreaming forum.
