DesertJerry's Photo DesertJerry 09 Jul 2008

Many comments in the Microsoft newsgroups that installing KB951748 results in an inability to go online. Many users reporting problems. :(

Suggest you do not include this item in APUP updates.

More info from the Microsoft newsgroups:

Problem appears to be incompatibility between the update and Zone Alarm. :o

Word is to not install the update till issue is fixed by Microsoft or ZoneLabs or both.

I was reading the ZoneAlarm forums and it looks like everybody is going crazy.

You're right, it looks like MS is working on an update. KB951748 will be omitted for the time being.

Isn't there a way for APUP to detect ZoneAlarm is running on the system that is downloading the patch and warn the user with a popup or disable the download? And if not, this might be a good ability for the next version of AutoPatcher to have. Maybe an additional rule that can be included with a download to indicate which registry keys or programs, if they exist, should warn user or disable the update.

Thanks for AutoUpdater, it helps alot.

p.s. It is worth noting that ZA users can fix the problem by setting its security to medium. Uninstalling ZA also solves the problem. I personally use Comodo, it has won several personal firewall shootouts, has good intrusion detection, and its free for home use. I don't know why people use ZA still, it loses all the firewall detection contests, you're almost as protected if you just turn on Windows Firewall. :-P Anyways, its worth noting that there are alternatives, and it can be fixed by setting the security lower (but this may be unacceptable).

Looks like AutoPatcher can now include this update. B)

Yup - looks like ZoneAlarm took the rap on this one - KB951748 added to XP x86 pack. Will be added to the others soon as soon as they are ready.

I posted virtually the same information HERE yesterday (updated today) for two reasons:
1. This current thread is "logged-in members only"
2. The problem seems to affect XP but not Vista
