Hi
I have install windows uptime tool with autopatcher. Don’t laugh but does anyone no where to find it. I have xp pro and I’ve looked everywhere, would be good if I could launch the thing.

No worries, I haven't played with this tool myself in a while: The Tool is copied into your Windows/system32 folder. Then a new shortcut should be created in your Start Menu under Windows Uptime Tool.

yep system32 started it from there its not in the start menu, dont no why that is.

It seems like the Startup Control Panel shortcut also disappeared, except in the control panel

I think the shortcuts are not being created because shortcut.exe has "gone missing".

Do we need to find a replacement, like mklnk.exe?

Just so I know that I’m reading this correctly this is a bug with the downloaded uptime?????????????

So in which case should i report this in the bug/fix section?????????

Well I think it's a bug in AutoPatcher, because the shortcuts in the Start Menu should be created by a helper program (shortcut.exe) which doesn't seem to exist on the system at all.

shortcut.exe seems to have been missing a long time -- I've just looked at a box with the "old" AP on it and it was missing a year ago too. Beats me how blaze ever got this to work!

WindowsUptime will still work without all this -- as a temporary fix you can always create your own shortcut.

There's no need to report this in the bug/fix section as well.

I was working on generating an INF to create a dynamic shortcut to wherever the System32 file is stored. (Can't assume it's going to be the "C" drive everytime) I figured that AP use to use a program called shortcut.exe which is indcated in the syntax of the module. I think I might have found the utility online which I'll go this route for now. It's freeware which if all testing goes well, I'll include this with the AP Base.

The next time anybody updates the AP Engine, mklink.exe will download which allows for dynamic shortcuts to be created. Additionally the Windows Uptime tool module will now display for Vista, Server 2K3, and 2K8.

Ok now you’re going to laugh

I put the shortcut in to the all user start folder turned the pc off and on a few time. Its works great but then I thought I would delete the shortcut just to make sure it wouldn’t run at start up. Don’t get me wrong I do want it running but I would like the ability to turn it off when I need to.

Yes you guessed it now with the shortcut gone the thing starts every time the pc is started. Any idea why that is and what I would have to do to stop it from starting.

Well, -- at least you have a sense of humour!

WindowsUptime.exe will be starting from the Run key in the Registry. Check-out:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
or, if not there, look at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If you still can't find it, or are uncomfortable editing the registry, try using something like AutoRuns by Sysinternals.
Sysinternals is now owned by Microsoft, so try this link: AutoRuns for Windows v9.32 if you want to know more.

I have to add the usual warning about editing the registry (even if you are an expert):
There is no backup when you edit the Registry. Careless editing of the Registry could permanently trash Windows. If you do not know what you are doing, you could lose your data. Be careful!

You could try running it and UNchecking "Launch iconized in system tray on startup"

There is no tick box on myone so did as you recommended and deleted the reg that did the job.

Question

As my autopatcher has the bad windows uptime how would I delete it from my USB drive. So when autopachter updates it will get the new version .

Technically all you have to do is run APUP again which it will replace any module/update that doesn't match the MD5 - (any bad files are replaced with good ones automatically)

If you want to force a replaced, just delete the folder: modules\AddOns\WinUptime_x86_enu.apm_files
