Well bizzare policy to say the least. All in all so far SP3 based XP works a little better. Good work for MS :)

my system (xp pro sp3) found 2 updates this morning:
KB931125 (rootcert) that now it's v 17,0,2195,0

and, by my surprise, to access WU, i was required to install KB898461 that is removed in SP3 script. it installed fine and the .cat file for this one is the exact same that was before, but the location for that download isn't the same

The root cert has been updated in all the releases. I found the same thing with KB898461 which is pretty odd. I plan on looking at the versioning of the files it updates this morning.

Additionally KB944043, KB951830, plus the Windows Update client was just updated. B)

If you think this is a lot, you should take a look at the Vista updates that came out yesterday. Ouch!

KB898461 is downloaded from here through MU: http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdo...71d19fc7249.exe

Looking at the registry, it still shows this update as a SP3 install. Still though the files included are missing until you install the update. I'll probably add this back to the XP pack and remove the delete tags tonight.

Nice job Microsoft... =)

For Windows 2000 SP4, however, MSFT already has:
kb951698-v2 !!

And for kb951978, the title is:
"Script output is not displayed as expected when you run VBScript or JScript scripts in ... Windows XP Service Pack 3"

It corrects date, time and currency formatting for locales outside the USA.
It updates wscript/cscript/vbscript/jscript.

As everyone knows, it was Patch Tuesday again yesterday...

The good news is there is only one security patch:
MS08-037 (=kb953230) "Vulnerabilities in DNS Could Allow Spoofing"
a.k.a kb951748 (client side) a.k.a kb951746 (server side)

The bad news is:
This patch breaks ZoneAlarm (both free and Pro versions) - you lose all internet access. Current ZoneAlarm advice (HERE) is to update to the latest version of ZoneAlarm or UNinstall kb951748.

UPDATE 10-July-2008: changed ZoneAlarm link; updated ZoneAlarm advice

Yes, confirmed:- Same Microsoft filename but different contents.
I noticed this a couple of days ago, but forgot to post about it. Sorry!

I have updated the KB951978 thread with a new post (HERE) with technical details and a warning.

KB941569 (=MS07-068) is rapidly turning into a nightmare.

First, Microsoft forgot about XP-Service Pack 3 until 10-June-08,
then they decided that KB923689 (=MS06-078) is not superseded (previously it was),
then people with WSUS are offered the update twice and have to install it twice (yes -- both times),

now the download page shows it as a new download "Date Published: 7/15/2008" but you get the same file as last year (dated 2-November-07).

kb942763 (December 2007 cumulative time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems)

is obsolete, it has been replaced by

kb951072 (August 2008 cumulative time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems)

Neither of these were published when MSFT says they were. The Dec 2007 update came out in November; was replaced in April 2008 without updating the title or release date in the kb article and is now superseded by the August 2008 update published in July.

@Cristiano,
The April 2008 version of the December 2007 update (file dated 28-March-2008 on MSFT servers) has different size & different MD5 to the earlier version.

Edit: Added note on April 2008 version

the date has changed, in fact. the md5 for the .cat file, the md5 for the file and the download location, don't. but sometimes, ms updates some languages and others don't.

but really, i don't know why they change just the date for the file release...
