After fully patching, a clean install of WinXP SP3, with autopatcher/Aug08. Microsoft update site is still showing
two (2) critical issues to install (not including the Windows Defender definitions KB915597).

The first one is KB936181 Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Service 4.0 SP2. This update is in the downloaded AP file folder for XP. However, not listed in the critical section ; but, in the modules/components/_msxml folder. Looking at the .apm files, the version info doesn't show as applicable for "XP_SP3_X86". If, this info is added to the version info, then it will show up as a available update to install when AP is ran; however, it is located in the Update Components area and not Critical Update area. After installing from there, it satisfies the need for it when WU scans ur system.

The second is Security Update for WinXP w/Media Format Runtime 9.5 KB923689. Would this be because the machine is currenting running Windows Media Player V10. I know that V10 updates are still installable from Current AP files. If so,
then this file is currently not included in the AP release. And, in checking the Microsofit security bulletin, theres no mention of V10 needing or not-needing this update. Just makes references to 9.5 and earlier, and says not needed for Windows media format 11 series.

So if running WMP10, its a critical update according to Microsoft.... and if upgrade to WMP11 , then WU says you need critical update kb941569 (which is included in the AP files) and not the previous 923689 file. Guess this patches the previous one plus adds patches for wmp11? Only issue here was AP shows the patch installed (blue) and WU update site detects it as not installed and wants to download it. Not sure what issue here might be.

Finally, AP (with WMP11 installed) is showing KB936782 as a critical install. WU does not indicate it as a critical update.
I think that is because it doesn't apply if SP3 is installed????

Just minor file editing possibly can fix this?

Boy, you are good at nit picking all the updates that I haven't gotten to yet... :P It's all good though since all of these have been on my to-do list.

XML Updates - Still need to talk to the others before updating the parent modules since these effect their releases too.

KB936782 - Didn't notice this until you mentioned it. I'll look into this which it should be a quick fix.

I see that Microsoft only recently changed the detection rules for these updates:

Windows XP -SP-3 was added to KB936227 (=MS07-042) on June 24, 2008.
Windows XP -SP-3 was added to KB923689 (=MS06-078) on June 10, 2008.

freeloader,
when you say:

theres no mention of V10 needing or not-needing this update
the answer is that -- this is needed for WMP10. In Microsoft's strange numbering scheme 9.5 means 10.

Wasnt meaning to be a nit picker....lol... was just a observation on some minor issues . Figured you would get around to it eventually: but, didn't
see anywhere that it had been mentioned....so, figured might jus be a oversight. Heck, we use this program so much..... no tell'n how much
bandwidth its save us.. Just want to let you know that all your efforts are really appreciated.
