IE7 fails to install

Hi.

I used apup.exe to download "Windows XP/2003 SP2 (x64)" and "DotNet AddOn Pack".

I ran autopatcher.exe like this:
"%wpipath%\\install\\apup_Win2003_XP_x64_DotNet\\autopatcher.exe" /unattend /noreboot /log /verbose /answerfile:%wpipath%\\install\\apup_Win2003_XP_x64_DotNet\\apup_Win2003_XP_x64_DotNet.aaf

I cannot see the agument list, nor the install list in autopatcher.log.
Is that the whole of autopatcher.log?
Or did you edit it?

ie7.log ends with about 170 files not yet installed.
What happened after Windows was rebooted?
Was IE7 installed then?

Once I ran autopatcher.exe with the /report option, it logs the command line arguments.

Here is an updated autopatcher.log:

After windows is rebooted, these are my observations:

1. new ie7 shortcut icon on the desktop (good)

2. windows update (icon in the bottom right system\notification tray) indicates there are updates available that should have been installed with autopatcher (not good)

3. double-clicking on the ie7 desktop shortcut for the first time brings up a confirmation dialog:
Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?
[ ] Always perform this check when starting Internet Explorer.
[Yes] [No]

4. ie ran but looks like ie6

5. clicking on help > about internet explorer indicates IE v7.0.5730.13

6. Trying to browse to www.msn.com for example will bring up an error message:
The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context.

Thankyou for the information and your observations.

IE7 looking like IE6 has been reported by others.

I think the problem is that Autopatcher has installed IE7, but an update for IE6.
I think IE7 is installed. (If it is not installed, the Desktop icon will not run IE but will connect you to a Microsoft KB page.)

There are several things you can do to confirm this:

Have a look at ie7_main.log. Does it show any errors?

In the WINDOWS folder, what is the name of the KB950759 log-file:
Is it KB950759.log or KB950759_IE7.log?

This will help confirm if AutoPatcher has installed the wrong version of the update. If the IE6 update is installed (or the update install has failed) then Windows Update will show updates available.

Please save a copy of the KB950759 log-file (I may need to see it), then UNinstall KB950759.
Does IE7 now look like IE7 (not IE6)?

Part of the problem is that the IE7 install requires a reboot. Before the reboot, both Windows and AutoPatcher will show IE6 is installed.

If I am right, the only way to install is to run AutoPatcher twice: (1) Install IE7; (2) Install everything else.

I see C:\windows\KB950759.log but no KB950759_IE7.log

I uninstalled KB950759, rebooted, and ran ie from the desktop shortcut but it still looks like ie6.

I will try to first install IE7, run autopatcher, and report back my findings.

Ok, I was able to install ie7 first, reboot, and then use apup to install windows updates to the machine and ie7 worked as expected.

However, windows update still reports some updates available which I will post in a new thread.

I am thinking this should at least be documented.

Thank you for once again reporting back.
I have been through the posted log files again and I can confirm from the log files what you already know from testing:

There is no way that IE7 and updates to IE can be installed during the same pass of AutoPatcher.
IE7 must be installed first, then the computer rebooted, before any IE updates can be installed.

Explanation: NONE of IE7's relevant files are installed until setup gains exclusive access to the windows file system after the reboot.

I agree this must be properly documented. There has been talk (for some time) of modifying Autopatcher.exe to allow IE7 to be installed on its own but I do not know what progress Antonis has made with this.
