Dot Net Fx 3.5 SP1

DesertJerry's Photo DesertJerry 11 Aug 2008

Microsft posted the final version of DotNetFx 3.5 SP1 - time to update AutoPatcher.

They also posted: VisualC++2008SP1Redist_x86.exe (also the x64 and IA64 versions) (if applicable to AutoPatcher) and updated to SP2 for many Visual Studio 2008 Express items.

Do your thing. ;)

Thought I'd better mention an error message I got after downloading the full download as opposed to the web installer. The progress bar was about 60% of the way across when the error message came up - said the install could not continue as I did not have Dot Net Framework 3.0 SP2 installed; which is not true - I have Dot Net Framework 3.0 SP2 (Beta) installed.

I then searched Microsoft and could not find any such download as Dot Net Framework 3.0 SP2 (Beta or Final).

Checked AutoPatcher - it had no such item listed either.

Checked Add/Remove Programs and found Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack2 (Beta) - so, at this point, I'm a bit confused as to why .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Final is confused and/or is having a problem; especially since I could not find .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 (Beta or Final) anywhere.

Anyone else have a similar problem or a possible answer?

When I read your second post I'm rather reminded of a rant last year in a Windows 2003 blog that I follow:

Quote

I hate .net

I hate patching .net

I hate repairing .net

.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 silently installs .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and .NET Framework 3.0 SP2. Neither of these seem to be available as standalone packages at the moment (but that will probably change). The final release of .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is supposed to be able to handle upgrades from the Beta version. However, the Beta version itself had a problem with trashing earlier frameworks (i.e. .NET Framework 2.0).

If your installation is now trashed you may have to roll-back to earlier versions, which has to be done in reverse numerical order. That is:
1) Go to the Add/Remove Programs control panel
2) Find Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and uninstall it
3) Find Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 and uninstall it
4) Find Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and uninstall it
In theory, you do not need to reinstall anything at this point, other than .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, since it is a complete slipstream replacement for all earlier version(s).

From the README file:
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 install will fail on Vista if Windows Update is turned off

Happy patching!

Do not have Vista so that's not an issue.

Had to uninstall version 3.5 sp1 beta and 3.0 sp2 beta to get 3.5 sp1 final to install ok; did not uninstall 2.0 sp2.

Thanks for posting that it's now fixed.

I was pretty sure that was the case, but there's bound to be someone else reading this thread who does have Vista...

So here's Microsoft's advice:

To resolve this issue:
Before you install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on Windows Vista or Windows 2008 Server, make sure that Windows Update service is turned on.
