Version 1.05 just made its debut today. As I mentioned in the opening thread, this release is all about what is happening behind the scene's plus some bug fixes that a lot of people have been experiencing.

Change Log v1.05
Sept 9th
New: Bug localscript flag now works when specifying
New: Bug environment detection re-enabled if not using /log flag
New: Bug possible fix for Out of Script errors people have been reporting with v1.0.5

release lists/scripts now download to temp_bin which will delete itself upon completion
7-zip de-compression is now used instead of uz.exe.
Removed "Size" column from being displayed
Crash reports will display line code in error
Improved logging routines when you run the /log flag

Support for running on the root of a drive
Support for running from folders that contain spaces
A 404 file not found error doesn't result in not processing the rest of the queue
Decompression errors now don't result in a crash
Updated "Learn More" Link
Now detects Nederlands and Portuguese Brazil properly upon startup

edit: despide the version number doesn't change a bit, some issues that was found and reported to Erik was fixed. since Erik may be away for some time, i've updated the download to match with the latest fixed version. so, you only need choose to update apup and everything is ok

In the meantime, (while Erik has some well-earned rest) I can say that you will notice a few changes on-screen, but much effort has been put into making APUP work better and crash less. For example, you should find better handling of missing or corrupted downloads.

You'll also see that there are big changes to the log file -- including better diagnostics, better progress tracking and error reporting.

Wanted to let everybody know that a new revision of the AutoPatcher Updater was just released. I'll have the changelog and everything posted tomorrow B)
What?

Please don't say "It's released" then say everything will be posted tomorrow. Yuck. :(

I would have preferred knowing all this 'tomorrow'. :P

I'll be baaaaack.

I think there's some confusion about what "everything" means:

The new version of APUP really is released -- just run apup.exe and it will update itself to 1.05.

"everything" really means "everything else" (Proper announcement, full list of changes etc.)

Needs a manifest embedded, all the buttons are Windows 98 style ...

Oops, yes, sorry about that. (I prefer to think of it as Windows 2000 style, rather than Windows 98!) The manifest info was removed when we started testing the new version and didn't get put back in again.

Not sure when it can be slipped back in. Other improvements to the user interface are in the pipeline too.

Please notice also that the opening post of this thread has now been updated with a list of major changes and bug fixes and the download page (Downloads) now shows the right file information for the new APUP.ZIP.

I also like the word "retro" in general.

I'll go ahead and put this on my to-do list. This release mostly was for "background processes" which the next release I'm going to work on will address the GUI and what information is presented at the time of running.

When I read the original message I expected APUP to be its own new download, not that I had to run APUP.EXE and that it would update itself.

I see that 1.05 is now not trying to guess what releases to select. Well, not exactly what i wanted (i want to have an ability to save my selections) but it's nicer. Because i want to download Vista/XP updates from Win2003, so i had to remember to deselect 2003 all the time.

Still problems with showing dates in releases choosing screen with Russian locale, shows something greek instead of months names :)

@ wroot - Your first idea about saving releases is something that I have on my list of features I would like to include. This particular release is basically a bug release.

As for the Russian locale issue, could you run apup.exe /log and post the results of your log in the bug section of the forums?

As Erik has explained in the first post:

New: 7-zip de-compression is now used instead of uz.exe.
we now use a different program (7-zip's 7za.exe) instead of uz.exe for decompressing downloaded files.

That has two benefits:

1) We can unpack more file types, thus solving one or two problems that AutoPatcher currently has in installing some of the more unusual updates.

2) We can drop uz.exe, not because it is bad, but because we are absolutley fed up with it being falsely detected by anti-virus scanners.

More details of the (well-known) 7-zip program can be found here: 7-Zip Home Page

And, yes, once you have updated to the latest APUP, you can manually delete uz.exe from the apup_bin folder

Will autopatcher.exe update a system from APUP v10.5, if a Core release is not installed first?

No. You are going to need to start from scratch with none of the old "Core" versions that were created well over a year ago. If you run APUP, everything that you will need will download after you choose what releases you want.

i've added an new file to be downloaded by apup script: hit_this_to_generate_a_log_file_for_apup.cmd . this file can be opened with any text editor and it only contains the following command:
apup.exe /log

the whole idea about this file is provide an easier way to generate a log file for those that aren't familiarized with create shortcuts or something. this file is only 13 bytes long, so, this will not increase the download time in a significant way. also i've added this file into apup script, the next time that someone hit the option to update apup or at least leave it checked (it is checked by default), that file will be downloaded and will arrive at apup main folder

I've included "hit_this_to_generate_a_log_file_for_apup.cmd" file in apup.zip.

Bye
