please, try run it manually. it is located in this folder: modules\Critical\KB890830_files

by doing that, you may see if you have some sorte of well know malware, that may prevent this kb from running

There is a known issue with kb938464. Microsoft warn that it may not install GdiPlus.dll on Windows XP and 2003:

you already tryed run autopatcher from another location, with an short path, like c:\apup , just to check is this is an issue regarding the path? by the way, your system is running in english, nl...?

erik will give a break for some time. he is overloaded since long time ago and he felt that was deserving some personal live too.

since the manteiner for ENU release is erik, just him do changes in his script. but even him will need the .log file to know what is going wrong

It seems to me that there is confusion with this hotfix. I too had a similar problem with it and searched the net to find more about the tool. I find a really good description which may shed more light on the matter.


This is a good initiative from Microsoft, but it can also be extraordinarily confusing to use. Here's the story. The Removal Tool will detect and delete various pests that are running on your system. Currently this list includes: MSBlast (Blaster), Mydoom, Nachi, Sasser, Netsky, Bagle, Sdbot, Locksky, Wukill, Zotob, Atak, Torvil, Zlob, WinNT/F4IRootkit (which exploits Sony's poorly-conceived copy protection system) and approximately 50 other viruses. However, it does not scan all your files like antivirus software - the Removal Tool only targets those viruses that are currently running on your system. If you have an infected file but the virus is not yet active (eg an infected email attachment that you haven't run) then this tool will not touch it. For this job, you will still need an antivirus program.

Thanks for the report. That is a good explanation of MRT.

And yes, MRT is a removal program, not an anti-virus scanner. You can still run it manually, but automatically it will never run except when it is downloaded and installed each month.

It actually does scan files but not emails or email attachments. If you run it manually, you can select from a limited scan (which is what it does automatically) or a full scan. It is still only lookig for the malware that Microsoft lists in the support articles on their website.

FWIW, I experienced same as described by 'maxsisac' with KB938464 ... AND KB890830 as well. No desire to be anal here, but KB938464 is the GDI+ related "Security Update for Windows XP" and KB890830 is the "Malicious Software Removal Tool September 2008 v2.2". That triviality aside, both were giving me same install problem.

I already manually patched via Windows Update, but thanks to Cristiano for the tip about simply using the nested installer instead of the AutoPatcher GUI. I will keep that in mind if/when need arises again.

KB938464 }
KB890830 } both of these are now known problems.

There are two mistakes in AutoPatcher's files which prevent AutoPatcher itself from installing these two updates automatically.

It will take a couple more days to make arrangements to fix this. Meanwhile, as already noted, the correct files have been downloaded by APUP and you can install them manually.
