Autopatcher detects many more updates than MS

oztim's Photo oztim 14 Sep 2008

Hi
I have a Vista Ultimate system with SP1 that has received regular updates from Microsoft (including recommended updates). Servicepack1 was installed back in April 08 after its release.

As of today, 15th September 2008 it is up to date - Microsoft Update shows 'No New Updates are available for your computer'

(I've checked that the tick is against "Include recommended updates when downloading, installing or notifying me about updates" and that "Use Microsoft Update" is ticked. I've also checked that there are no hidden updates apart from the usual 34 Language packs.)

I've just loaded Autopatcher for the first time (which looks fantastic... thanks!) - and I've run apup to download all Vista SP1 updates.
When I run Autopatcher, it shows a whole load of recommended updates that I need, and also one critical update.

How come there are so many updates that autopatcher says I need, whereas Microsoft update shows I don't need anything ?
I've rebooted and tried this again with the same issue. I've checked my update history and noted that there are only a few failures which were all rectified following reboots. Please can you tell me if I've done something wrong? I don't know if I should let Autopatcher apply all of these updates or not.

Out of the Critical updates, it shows everything blue except for this single update in black
Root certificates update (May)
which I guess has been superceded.

Out of the Recommended updates it shows all of the following in black :

European Union Expansion font update
KB907306 (web folders)
KB944325
KB946665 v2 (media player 11)
KB950917 v2

KB950888
KB954160
KB954563
KB954708
KB955836
KB951250

and it shows only the following in blue :

KB951978
KB950126 cumulative update Media Center for Vista)

sometimes, some updates gone public and don't go to WU. i know, it sounds strange, but it always was like this. ms make public an bullentin, where you can read that an issue was found on xyz product and ms has released an fix for that. by some reason that i don't know, they made public the fix, but they don't put it on WU at the exact same time. you may see that easily with windows update agent, that today at microsoft download center is at version 7.2.6001.784, but WU says that the current one is 7.0.6000.381. the exact same thing happends with a lot of updates

but don't worry. we don't put any beta software in AutoPatcher. to be on AutoPatcher, the rules are pretty simple: must be public; must not be beta

anything else, just type :)

In addition to what Cristiano has said, you will find differences in the Recommended category because of different detection methods. This happens with Microsoft itself as well. In a corporate environment you will get a difference between using WU/MU and with SMS, for example.

Also, what is Recommended can be a matter of opinion. Recommended means just that: Recommended. Any update in that category is for the user to decide whether they want it or not.

The category of update that you really "need" are those labelled Critical. That is why AutoPatcher, by default, selects all Critical updates but does not select all Recommended updates. AutoPatcher simply informs you that they are available.

To select a Recommended update you should make an informed choice. As an example, one you have listed is KB955836. The full description of that update is "A hotfix rollup package is available for the Traditional and Simplified Chinese IMEs in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008". It is up to you whether you install it or not.

For this particular update I suspect that WU will only offer it if you have the appropriate IME already installed and running. I could probably find similar explanations for all of the updates in your list.

To set your mind at rest, no you have not done anything wrong. Also you will not harm your system by installing eveything. As Cristiano has already said, AutoPatcher only offers those Microsoft updates that are publicly available and supported by Microsoft.
