Hi Stick Donkey,

I am assuming you mean you want your machines on your network to update with this, and not that you want to create an Autopatcher file from your local WSUS source...
If your machines are already in a WSUS group you can just run "wuauclt /detectnow" (without the quotes) to patch a local machine, otherwise, if you want to patch remote machines, you can write a VBS like the one below:

strComputer = inputbox("Enter a computer name to run WUA detectnow","Invoke detectnow") 
if strComputer = "" then wscript.quit 
on error goto 0 
Set autoUpdateClient = CreateObject("Microsoft.Update.AutoUpdate",strComputer) 
AutoUpdateClient.detectnow() 
wscript.echo "All done."

Thanks for APUP. There is a lot of info here, gang, so I apologise in advance, but, here goes:

I'm sure the question has been asked, that is how to make APUP work like the old Autopatcher did? As in, can I come here to this net cafe with a fast connection, run APUP make a big file - I don't care how large I use a 4 gig stick - and take it home to update my pc that's on dial up?

heisdeadjim, yes, you can do that. just remember that in your home you shall run autopatcher.exe and not apup

Why do you need one big file? Just copy the folder over to your USB stick instead (or zip the folder up)

M2Ys4U, i'm not sure if is an good idea copy a lot of small files into an usb stick. it may be just with the one that i have (an kingston 2.0 in a 2.0 port), but takes a lot more time to do that than if i zip it (without compression) and copy it

wild idea why don't you just run the APUP FROM THE USB STICK??

Thanks gang, ok, so I will run APUP "away" from home, copy everything to the stick, take it home and run autopatcher.exe

I appreciate it. So can I take it that the crux of the issue was not that you were collating the updates, per se, but that you were saving them somewhere and distributing them from non-Microsoft servers?

Correct.

I can see where MS was coming from, but they could of worked with the team to ensure things were kosher rather than just blindly shutting us down. Although, I think it was because one of their rent-a-lawyers sent out a C&D and they wanted to save face rather than them disagreeing with the project as a whole. If they'd overturned it, then people would just ignore the C&Ds generally.

Not a nice place to be in for both sides of the argument. My webhost threatened to cut off my dedicated server because MS not only sent the C&D to me, as the guy who ran the torrents, but to them too. Fortunately they e-mailed me to discuss it rather than being Nazis about the issue.

First off, all who have worked on the autopatcher project are elite, thanks for your determination and tenacity.

Second, the APUP I just downloaded works near flawlessly, with no crash bugs I can find.

I've been using Autopatcher to update several XP machines I maintain since mid 2007. After August 2008 final release I have held back, reading the posts in the forum hoping against hope that a system would eventually emerge which I could continue to use, as before. I have very limited bandwidth available so have been reluctant to try APUP before.
Yesterday, I followed one of the instructions I had previously read, installed ApUP in a (backed-up) Autopatcher folder with updates to August 2008, ran APUP, selected XP 86 and off it went. It stopped once and when re-started carried on from where it stopped, this time without a problem. When finished I ran autopatcher as usual and it installed the 16 updates it defaulted to - BRILLIANT!! I then copied the whole folder to my Notebook (overwriting the old installation and Voila within minutes two machines were updated!
Thanks guys, you are the best! I plan to update this install on a multisession DVD and just update the files as updates are received?

I'm pretty sure Microsoft isn't cutting off downloads. APUP just doesn't know what to do when the server tries to send it elsewhere (another MS server) to get the files.

said that i renew my congratulations to all the people behind the ap project (and that this won't be a criticizing post in any way),

i was becoming curious about when a new build of apup is to be expected and about when the project, apup and/or the release scripts i mean, will be be declared "stable" or something close to ... any idea about that, guys(and, of course, girls if any ) ? ;-)

Either way, it would be REALLY nice if APUP knew how to handle this rather than freezing waiting for data it's never going to get. Hell, I'll donate $20 for that feature alone. I love autopatcher and would like to keep using it. Far nicer than "Windows Update". It's probably just an HTTP redirect, should be easy enough to handle. Or just retry the current file if you don't get data for 30sec or so. I'm on about the 30th restart of APUP now. :rolleyes:
