I have Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 3 (set to English Australia)
Avira AntiVir Personal version: 8.1.0.331
ZoneAlarm version: 7.0.483.000

I had AutoPatcher Updater v1.0.0.4 but hadn't updated since July08.
I ran apup.exe today and it worked and apup.exe was automatically updated to v1.0.0.5.
I then ran autopatcher.exe and again it worked and I installed one critical update (don't know which one).
I rebooted and ran autopatcher.exe again and everything seemed complete but I sensed there might have been a problem.

I saw that AutoPatcher Updater v1.05 had been released so, to be safe, I downloaded it (MD5 hash checked OK).
I renamed the old apup folder to "apup-old" and, after unzipping it to a new apup folder, ran the new apup.exe which worked and displayed the same list of Available Releases as previously with the following three items pre-ticked:

AutoPatcher Engine 5.6.81 All 30 Nov 2007
AutoPatcher for Windows XP SP3 (x86) English 16 Oct 2008

But now, when I run the new autopatcher.exe, I get the following error message:

Hi Chris.

Your log-file shows that APUP is being blocked from accessing the Internet. This may be AVG, or (more likely) is ZoneAlarm.

The first thing I would check would be ZoneAlarm. In fact, with that version of ZoneAlarm, you are lucky to be accessing the Internet at all! See Warning for ZoneAlarm users

Both copies of APUP that you have are exactly the same. We have been a bit slack in referring to this as 1.0.0.5, 1.0.5 and 1.05. All three numbers refer to the same file. Sorry about the confusion -- I will make sure that this doesn't happen with the next release.

Hi James,

I shut down ZoneAlarm and disabled AntiVir and then ran the new autopatcher.exe again but got the same error message:
"Generating tree... you have downloaded the wrong release"

I noticed that both the updated old autopatcher.exe (now v5.6.0.81), which works, and the newly downloaded autopatcher.exe (also v5.6.0.81), which doesn't work, both have MD5 sums of 50f4c5ce53ce91270b78b10678387333 so appear to be identical files.

However, the updated old autopatcher.exe has a Date Modified: 12/03/2007 5:42 PM (Monday, 12 March 2007, 5:42:20 PM)
whereas the newly downloaded autopatcher.exe has a Date Modified: 3/12/2007 5:42 PM (Monday, 3 December 2007, 5:42:20 PM).

Identical times but it's as if one is listing in dd/mm/yyyy format and the other is in mm/dd/yyyy format. Is that just a coincidence?

Any other thoughts?

the issue is caused by this:
Current Locale: English - Australia / Non-Unicode Default: English - United States

Locale English - Australia has LCID 3081 and the current version of english modules has LCID 1033 and 2057, if i'm not mistaken. wherever, you said that you have an previews version that worked. if you can, please, open any critical module with notepad and look for SystemLanguage= just to be sure about. an possible solution for that, if the updates are the same, is change the value for SystemLanguage to match with your own. if possible, you also can change the SystemLanguage from any module that you have downloaded, save it and run autopatcher.exe again. if this error vanish and you got an tree with at least the LCID that you have added, please report, because MS may have changed this with sp3

just an coincidence. dates from files can change according to the settings of the software used to upload the file. the md5 don't change because of that.

Hi Cristiano,

I now have two apup folders:
old apup - E:\AutoPatcher\apup-old
new apup - E:\AutoPatcher\apup

I have a folder C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB951698$ so I opened E:\AutoPatcher\apup-old\modules\Critical\KB951698_xp_x86_enu.apm in Notepad and found the following:

The new apup folder does not have a "modules" sub-folder so I'm unable to check it.
In Control Panel - Regional Options I reset the "Standards and formats" and "Location" to English (United States) and rebooted.
I deleted all of the new apup folders and downloaded apup.zip again, unzipped and ran apup.exe and autopatcher.exe
Got the same error message: "Generating tree... you have downloaded the wrong release"

I ran apup /log:

So after:
1. Shutting down ZoneAlarm and disabling AntiVir
2. Resetting the "Standards and formats" and "Location" to English (United States)
The new autopatcher.exe still doesn't work. The old one does but doesn't d/l any new updates.

When I run the old apup /log (E:\AutoPatcher\apup-old\apup.exe /log) I get the same "autopatcher_xp_x86_enu.script: ctlwinsckdownloader component failure" as I get with the new apup - understandable since the MD5s are the same.

But apart from that my PC seems to be functioning normally and I'm not having any other problems.
Is there anything else I can try?

Well, you've done all the right things, but still APUP is being blocked in some way.

Specifically, this line in your log-file tells me that APUP is not able to connect to the internet and download its script then download all the updates:

autopatcher_xp_x86_enu.script: ctlwinsckdownloader component failure

Previously, the ctlwinsckdownloader component failure has occurred if Agnitum Outpost firewall or PC Tools Spyware Doctor has been running. Both of these have to be reconfigured to allow APUP to run. It is not enough just to disable them. Do you have anything like this that is monitoring or controlling access to/from the Internet?

APUP also needs access to the WINDOWS\system32 folder and access to the Registry. So it also will not work unless you are running as an Administrator.

just an silly question: you say this:

this file isn't in the same package than apup, so, if you didn't download this by hand, apup once was able to access internet to download this. but something may have changed and now apup is unable to. probably because apup had updated himself and the new version was blocked in some way. also, in the first post, you said that you are running zonealarm. just to be sure about, double click zonealarm icon that is on tray. then, check program control and locate apup.exe (it may have more than one instance, since apup has worked in some way to download autopatcher.exe) check "allow" to all settings. it may work just with "allow" for access, but since i don't run zonealarm anymore, i can't be sure about

Apart from Avira AntiVir antivirus, which I installed just recently, all other programs are long time residents, but surely AntiVir wouldn't block access to the internet would it?


Cristiano, I checked the ZoneAlarm Program Control and deleted all listings for AutoPatcher. I also deleted the E:\AutoPatcher\apup folders and then unzipped apup.zip afresh.

Initially, apup.exe successfully fetches the components and sets up the sub-folders, so ZoneAlarm is allowing it to access the internet. However, when I run autopatcher.exe I just get the same error message: "Generating tree... you have downloaded the wrong release"

In the ZoneAlarm Program Control, for both E:\AutoPatcher\apup\apup.exe and E:\AutoPatcher\apup\autopatcher.exe, both boxes for Access: Trusted & Internet are ticked.

I'm running out of hair to tear out so any other thoughts?

Thanks for the further information.

I am not at all familiar with SafeHouse, but from what i have just read about it, it seems quite likely to block APUP. I suppose it depends on your settings, but as I have never used it I don't know for sure.

Until APUP.exe is fully working and no longer gives the ctlwinsckdownloader component failure error, there is no point in running Autopatcher.exe at all.

Under the folder E:\AutoPatcher\apup, how many folders do you have? Do you have ALL of:
[indent]apup_bin
bin
modules
tools
translations
win9xnt[/indent]
Under the folder E:\AutoPatcher\apup\modules, how many folders do you have? Do you have ALL of:
[indent]Components
Critical
NonCritical
Tweaks[/indent]
Under the Critical and Noncritical folders there should be about another 130 folders.

If you don't have all of these, then something is blocking APUP from downloading, creating folders, and saving files.
Also if you don't have any of these, the AutoPatcher error is really only the equivalent of "missing files".

Hi James,

SafeHouse is a disk encryption program similar to TrueCrypt. I've had it for years and it has never blocked AutoPatcher before. I have a few encrypted folders but they are normally unmapped (unmounted?) and I only map them when I want to access them.

I don't use Agnitum Outpost firewall or PC Tools Spyware Doctor.

Previously, every time I ran apup.exe, I got all of the folders except "modules" and its sub-folders. So I thought I'd start again from scratch:

1. Rename E:\AutoPatcher to E:\AutoPatcher08 to preserve all old stuff
2. Create new E:\AutoPatcher
3. Unzip E:\AutoPatcher\apup.zip to get E:\AutoPatcher\apup\apup\apup.exe
4. Reboot and wait few minutes for system to settle.
5. Start | Run... | Open: E:\AutoPatcher\apup\apup\apup.exe /log
6. THIS time, get all folders including "modules" and its sub-folders and fetch 133.86 MiB from download.microsoft.com
7. Tear out last strands of hair when get Verification Failed: One or more files has failed verification. etc

Still getting that damned "ctlwinsckdownloader component failure". It appears there's a gremlin in the system somewhere but all of my other programs seem to be working and updating themselves correctly so I'm suspecting the gremlin might be in the new apup.exe.

My desk is starting to get very bloody here so unless someone can suggest why I'm always getting this "ctlwinsckdownloader component failure" I might have to wait until I do a clean reinstall of XP, or the next release of apup, before trying again.

Any other ideas?

nothing has changed between your attempt that worked (apup at least fetched the script) and something at the half of your download? it appears that apup was blocked after start an download. do you wanna do an simple test? try download this link with your browser just to see if you are being able to reach some of the failed ones. also, you may have some sort of issue with our dns. if possible, can you change for those:
primary: 208.67.222.222
secondary: 208.67.220.220

those dns was taken from here:
http://www.opendns.com/

this service is free.

of course, your IC may have down at the middle of your download. are you behind some sort of proxy?

I'm not 100% sure but I think my ISP uses a proxy server somehow as a money saver however it doesn't seem to adversely affect my internet in any other way that I'm aware of.

1. I clicked your link and successfully downloaded wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe 24.5MB at 161 KB/sec.
2. Spurred on by that success, I then immediately ran apup.exe again and fetched wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe again plus another couple of updates (unfortunately I didn't make a log this time) before it again stalled with the same Verification Failed error.
3. I changed my DNS settings to OpenDNS as per instructions and rebooted then checked that internet was still working.
4. Start | Run... | Open: E:\AutoPatcher\apup\apup\apup.exe /log

Yes! Anything already correctly downloaded is safe to use. Both APUP and AutoPatcher verify everything.

if your isp have some proxy, you have downloaded those from the cache. so, each time that someone is able to download ok an file, that file goes to the cache and the others can download that file fine too. also, some sort of server in your ISP may think that you are eating too much speed and lock you

well, is and not is. not is because just 5 of those files may be corrupted. not is, because you are missing 5 updates only and your log shows the proper location for that. so, you can manually download the remain ones and put them in the proper folder. then, you may run apup again to be sure that everything is ok. that isn't the way it meant to be, but it shall work

First, MANY thanks for all of the help you've given me thus far. Your efforts are VERY much appreciated!

After the success with wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe, I downloaded the remaining updates manually using the URLs in apup.log, thinking that once they were in my ISP's proxy cache, apup might then be able to fetch them successfully. Guess what! It didn't work!!! ... Same old Verification Failed error.

Cristiano, thanks to your explanation, I am starting to understand the process now. So, providing the *.apm files and *.apm_files folders are present, I can simply download the missing updates using the URLs from apup.log and then move them to the appropriate apup folder. OK, so I did that and then ran apup.exe again to check and found one last problem:

Something doesn't look right here. The file I downloaded and moved to the E:\AutoPatcher\apup\apup\modules\Components\KB943729_x86_files folder is
windows-en-us-kb943729_f2098e97852a5aa2dd10c5ea2f67ef16b12b6606.exe (Its MD5 is: dcf90b5030bc07942e849a7054493f2b)
but according to apup.log, apup is looking for Windows-en-US-KB943729-x86.exe.

What are your thoughts on this? Do I simply rename my file or would that stuff it up?

Yes, just rename the file. It won't break anything, because that's what APUP silently does.

If you are wondering, that long number (f2098e97852a5aa2dd10c5ea2f67ef16b12b6606) that is part of the file name, is also a hash.

I renamed the file and ran apup again and this time ... SUCCESS!!!!!!!
I made a Ghost backup of my OS (just to be safe) and then ran autopatcher.exe ... SUCCESS AGAIN!!!!!!!
I closed my eyes and held my breath and rebooted and ... miracle of miracles ... the bloody thing STILL WORKS!!!!!!!!!!

Back again!

I thought I'd checkout this "ctlwinsckdownloader component failure" error so I dusted off my reserve PC (Athlon 2500+) and clean installed XPPro SP3 and just some basic programs: Adobe Reader 5, Avast Antivirus, Firefox 3 without any tweaks or Add-ons.

I also set the DNS of both my router/modem (Billion BIPAC 5102) and the PC to OpenDNS's settings as per their instructions.

I downloaded a fresh copy of apup.zip, expanded it and ran apup.

It fetched most of the updates except the following and gave that same damned "ctlwinsckdownloader component failure" again.
I think the key part of the log is:

Let me deal with the easy part first:

.rti files and .ver files are difficult to download with a browser, because AutoPatcher's server tells the browser that thay are text files, so the browser displays them instead of downloading them to the Desktop. In Firefox you should be able to change this behaviour, but I am investigating modifying the server behaviour as well. Certainly an .rti file is not plain text -- it is a binary file as you have discovered. The .ver file is there only temporarily, it is about to be removed.

I couldn't figure out how to do it with Firefox but I was able to download them both as files with Opera.
After experimenting, I discovered that to save the .rti file with Firefox: File | Save Page As... | File name: xp_sp3_enu.rti ; Save as type: All Files
Is xp_sp3_enu.ver just a plain text file?
